PAUL Lambert has sent shockwaves around Adams Park by quitting today as manager of Wycombe Wanderers.

Lambert's surprise departure followed the club's failure to reach the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Few people inside the club saw his resignation coming until he was questioned about his future on Saturday evening by Bucks Free Press sports editor Dave Peters.

Lambert admitted to Peters that he was considering his position at the club, following the 1-0 semi-final defeat at Stockport County.

He followed this through today by handing his resignation in to Blues chairman Ivor Beeks before telling the players he was leaving at a pre-scheduled end-of-season debriefing at the training ground this afternoon.

Lambert will go down in history as one of the most successful managers the club has ever had.

In his two years at Adams Park, the 38-year-old former Champions League winner guided Wanderers to a never-to-be forgotten Carling Cup semi-final last season, where they drew with Chelsea in the first leg, before taking the club to the brink of Wembley this time around.

Blues media manager Alan Parry said: "I think Paul Lambert is the best manager we've had since Martin O'Neill."

Tell us what you think of Lambert's resignation and who you think should succeed him.

They should appoint Ivor :-)

Seriously though, he's done a good job. Good luck to him.

I hope they can find someone who can keep things moving forwards

What a pity he had done well for Wycombe, although he was obviously not a good loser. Never mind move on how about having John Gorman back at least we played football when he was here.

Mangles & washboards for goals in Bridge Street Car Park.

Sigh.

Long shorts.

Slicked down hair.

Central parting.

Football rattles.

I did not score, referee, sir, my shot never crossed the line...

Those were the days...

Better get someone else in quickly before all the out of contract players decice to follow him out. Also better start looking for new faces in the team.

Being located so close to London, the job applications should flood in, the time is ripe to get someone with passion to drive the team to the next level.
I think a priority is for someone who has their domestic roots within easy commuting distance to the club.

I would like to see Nigel Clough get a chance at a league club, he has done very well at Burton and has learnt his craft in the non leagues, a bit like a certain Mr O'Neill.

And if he has 10% of the success his father had...
