PAUL Lambert has sent shockwaves around Adams Park by quitting today as manager of Wycombe Wanderers.

Lambert's surprise departure followed the club's failure to reach the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Few people inside the club saw his resignation coming until he was questioned about his future on Saturday evening by Bucks Free Press sports editor Dave Peters.

Lambert admitted to Peters that he was considering his position at the club, following the 1-0 semi-final defeat at Stockport County.

He followed this through today by handing his resignation in to Blues chairman Ivor Beeks before telling the players he was leaving at a pre-scheduled end-of-season debriefing at the training ground this afternoon.

Lambert will go down in history as one of the most successful managers the club has ever had.

In his two years at Adams Park, the 38-year-old former Champions League winner guided Wanderers to a never-to-be forgotten Carling Cup semi-final last season, where they drew with Chelsea in the first leg, before taking the club to the brink of Wembley this time around.

Blues media manager Alan Parry said: "I think Paul Lambert is the best manager we've had since Martin O'Neill."
