CONSERVATIVE John Howell is the new MP for Henley after winning a by-election to replace Boris Johnson.

Mr Howell won by a majority of 10,116 ahead of the Liberal Democrats' Stephen Kearney.

Labour's candidate, Richard McKenzie, came an embarrassing fifth behind the Greens and the British National Party.

The Labour defeat came on the day prime minister Gordon Brown marked a year in office.

Mr Howell said it was "clear that the New Labour coalition is falling apart".

Boris Johnson stepped down as MP for Henley earlier this month after becoming Mayor of London.

The turnout was was lower than the last election, with just over half the constituency voting, compared to 67.9 per cent in 2005.

The results were:

John Howell (Cons) 19,796

Stephen Kearney's (Lib Dem) 9,680

Mark Stevenson (Green) 1,321

Timothy Rait (BNP) 1,243

Richard McKenzie (Lab) 1,066

Chris Adams (UKIP) 843

Why "poor Lib Dems"? Their share went up and Henley has always been one of the truest bluest seats, so the Lib Dems did well, all things considred.

After watching the BBC News earlier I am totally bemused by those idiots whom come out and still believe, no; in fact insist that Gordon Clown and his pack of muppets are doing a fantastic job for this country!!! Have they missed the cuts in services, the hospital closures, the total lack of policing, the "chav-yob" culture, the lack of data security, the plethora of taxes imposed on us, the out of control immigration and the overall decline of this country in the last 10 years!!!!!

So much for serving the public. Its about time those wasters start looking after OUR interests and not their own whilst lining their own pockets.

David Cameron do not let us down when you get voted in.

Labour are bad but the tories can't even run Wycombe let alone the country. The cuts have hit Wycombe because we have a weak MP and gutless Tory Councils who will not stand up to Labour.

Poor LibDems - as they had a good chance to win - but they clearly 'lost'.

A vote of a Libdem is a wasted vote - you may as well vote for the Bannanaman or the Teddy Bear guy for what its worth - they are useless! as are Labour... both a JOKE

I'm fed up with all this PC left wing, liberal whingeing rubbish that we've all been fed for the past 10 years or so...

GIVE US OUR HOSPITAL BACK!!!! GIVE US COMMON SENCE BACK!!!

We are losing the hospital services because the Tories stripped local democracy out of the NHS when they were in power! They still have not apologised for doing so. You are sadly deluded if you think Cameron is the answer

You could be on the money, you could be wrong ....... but who else is there?

NOTHING can be worse than the cr@p we have had for the last 10 years!!!

Blair/Brown may be bad but Thatcher was far worse. Bring back John Major then :-) Or what about Heath, Wilson or Callaghan? Oh yeah, they were bad too.

Oddly enough, we are on average richer now, more likely to be employed, more likely to live longer etc, etc. than 10, 20 yrs ago. Which government is in power has much less effect on our live than they would have us believe

Are you seriously trying to sell it to us that we have it good under this Government?...

"Mate"

Go back to reading your copy of the Guardian with your rose tinted glasses!

& morty

Look at what you're guys did when they 'tried' to run WDC - you were rubbish - so go back to crying in your left wing world - there is no difference between your party and the Labour party - in-fact - how’s Julia Wassel? I forget - is she yellow or red now?

You clearly didnt bother to read what I actually said.

Is that your response to anyone who doesnt share your facile opinions?

I would argue that there is no difference between Labour and the Tories.

Both supported an illegal war in Iraq.
Both have stripped democracy out of the NHS.
Both have closed thousands of Post Offices.
Both back the unfair Council Tax.
Both have helped to erode our civil liberties.
Both support an unfair electoral system where the government of the day is decided by a handful of marginal seats.
Both are funded by powerful self interest groups.
Both will do what Murdoch tells them to do.
Both have hit the poorest hard.
Both want power for themselves.

BOTH HAVE FAILED

An excellent result, although it is a bit disappointing that the Lib Dems weren't in a more dismal second place.

this was a certainty in an affluent area like henley. if you want high unemployment and high interest rates VOTE TORY !

Observer, of Democracy says...

Turnout was low though! Lower than the previous time in the General election. Perhaps if we had compulsory voting we might find out what all the people think and not just some of them.

Unfortunatelly in the leafy areas of Oxford and Bucks you could put a monkey up for election with a blue rosette and the Tory faithful would vote for it.
Its unfortunate but as long as we have a group of people who put self interest first you end up with a Tory !!!
