Wycombe laces up its trainers for annual race

MORE than 900 runners are set to line up for High Wycombe's annual half marathon tomorrow.

The 13.1 mile event, organised by Handy Cross Runners, sets off from The Rye at 9.30am.

And for the first time in its 27-year history the race will be run alongside a 10k sprint.

As well as those taking part in the half marathon, a further 300 runners will be taking part in the inaugural Wycombe 10k, which also sets off from The Rye.

Peter Eddington, spokesman for Handy Cross runners, said: "We think a lot of people are interested in running the shorter distances but at the same time we didn't want to detract from the half marathon, and it doesn't seem to have done so.

"We have got high figures in both races."

All the runners will set off together but will split as they reach Spring Lane off Daws Hill Road.

But spectators will be able to tell the two races apart as the 10k competitors will be distinguished by a bright yellow band across their numbers, and will wear numbers from 2001 upwards.

Motorists should also be aware there will be rolling road closures along the route of Sunday's races.

Yes I hate this event. People in Flackwell can not go anywhere between 9am-1pm because the roads will be blocked off. No traffic in or out for the whole morning.

That is all very good for the environment, but what if someone has a family emergency or something? It also has an impact on local businesses who are open on Sundays. We have had this annoyance since the marathon started, its about time the route was changed and they gave us a break.
