Long grass due to 'hazardous' conditions

OVERGROWN grass verges this summer are a result of "extremely hazardous" grass cutting conditions, Chiltern District Council have said.

A statement released by the council said that the grass had not been trimmed as frequently due to the wet weather.

It said that among the dangers of "wet grass" were that it "jams the machinery and the operational pedals of ride-on mowers become wet and slippery."

The council cuts grass within the urban areas of the towns and villages in Chiltern District, around some public buildings and highway verges on behalf of Buckinghamshire County Council.

Rachel Prance, spokeswoman for CDC said: "Normally we cut the grass verges twelve times a year and this works out at a three week cycle.

"Due to the rain and the soggy ground conditions, we have lost 61 working days of the scheduled 125 working days of grass cutting between April and mid-August, that's almost 50%.

"The grass-cutting season traditionally ran from April through to September, with the most intense growth occurring in the spring months.

"Climatic changes have resulted in a significant increase in this season and this together with the increased amount of rainfall has reduced the opportunities to cut the grass."

She added the council were "pre-empting" complaints from residents who may be annoyed about long grass by extending the cutting schedule.

Peter Woodburn, CDC's head of engineering and contract management, said: "As the grass now continues to grow well into the autumn, we have extended our schedules to continue cutting grass into November and possibly into December.

"We are also extending the working week using Saturdays to catch up when the weather permits."

absolute cobblers...im a sportsground and farm contractor and i run a fleet of ground maintenance machines...most of , if not all the council machines are 4 wheel drive anyway... if the operators were given proper training and told to slow down a bit they might do a better job an not run the risk of machines clogging.. its only because they do not know how to use ride-on mowers properly..

12 times a year?!! Certainly the verges on my daily route don't see a cutter 12 times a year, more like once or twice - and that's when it's not 'too soggy' FFS.

The verges in Hertfordshire are always much better kept than ours - I notice the change on my daily route when I drive deep into Herts - they are just as well kept this year as any other, so why aren't they struggling?

i just picked up on a comment highlghted by SBJones..."cut 12 times a years gives a three week cycle" some ones maths is dodgy then....in 52 week year this gives you a cycle of 4.3 weeks.... not 3 weeks as quoted, BUT if you use the 125 days "grass-cutting season" they use, it is only 10.4 DAY cycle...bottom line is they do a s*** job cos theyre inexperienced and dont know how to use the correct machine for the task... ive seen guys out with cylinder ride-ons mowing grass that is 5 to 8 inches tall, and the machine cant cope but they keep chomping at it, when they should be using rotary decks set at a higher cut. but hey, wat do iknow ive only been doing it 25 years and been to college as well as worked on some of the most prestigoues sportsgrounds in the country, as well as managing a polo round for 18 months
