A TRAFFIC light sliced through a refrigerator lorry "like a hot knife through butter" after the vehicle lost control and overturned this morning.

Paramedics have described it as a "very lucky escape" for the two men in their mid 20s who only had cuts and bruises.

It happened on Glenister Road, High Wycombe, outside supermarket Morrison's at 9.20am this morning.

Mark Lister of South Central Ambulance's cycle response team, was first on the scene.

He said: "It was going around the corner, rolled onto its side and has taken out a traffic light.

"They had minor injuries, it was so close to being a really serious accident, I don't think they appreciate how lucky they are to be honest.

"The back of the lorry which has taken out the traffic light has sort of just missed the cab. If it had hit the cab it would probably have killed them both instantly.

"The traffic light has sliced through the bulk of the vehicle which carries the goods - the hull - like a hot knife through butter.

"They are basically made out of fibreglasss and balsawood, it's just gone straight through it."

The men were treated on the scene by ambulance crew.

The cycle response crew arrived on the scene within the first minute of the call being received.

Police and fire crew also attended the accident.

passed the accident today it couldve been much worse, why did the truck lose control pulling up to traffic lights you are meant to be slowing down, foreign driver perhaps?

They are basically made out of fibreglasss and balsawood
So they’re not very strong then? They don’t make things they used to!

How did the traffic light lose control and overturn? Strange.

Should I ask what colour it was?

The carrying bit of a lorry or luton-type van is not designed to be strong - it would then be far too heavy. It is designed purely to enclose the goods. I'm sure that the cab itself as well as the lorry's chassis would be much stronger to meet safety standards.
A similar situation would apply to a caravan, the body of which would fall to bits in a crash.
Still, a vehicle shouldn't overturn unless it is incorrectly loaded or is being driven too fast for the situation.

the cab isnt made out of balsa wood and fibreglass..... I dont understand how the reporter can imply the traffic light would have cut through the cab like it did the back section....

and what speed were they doing to turn it over like that!

So that is why they had "reduced chicken" for sale in Morrison's at lunchtime today! I asked why they were so cheap, and all I was told was "they fell off the back of a lorry!!!!"

What information do we have about intended prosecution(s)?

Lorries don't just flip over at random like some out-of-control Chinese acrobat.

It actually takes some really stupid action on the driver's part to do that. Driving without due care at the very least.
