It's difficult to get too carried away with Wycombe's first win of the season at Chester on Saturday.

The Seals would be cast iron certainties for relegation if it was not for the financial problems that caused a trio of clubs being docked a significant number of points.

But nevertheless you can only beat what is put in front of you and Peter Taylor will be pleased at overcoming a poor quality side, teams that the Blues traditionally struggled against.

I wonder if Taylor is regretting not playing his preferred starting eleven for longer in pre-season? Because it certainly feels as if Wycombe are struggling to gel.

Last season's defence has not been as strong as last season and they certainly have work to do. While there is now some much needed width in the form of Nathan Ashton and Gavin Grant, goals remain a problem.

The decision, therefore, to release both Leon Knight and John Sutton from their contracts is rather surprising - especially if Taylor has not got at least one replacement up his sleeve.

Sutton was a big disappointed at Wycombe. He looked sluggish, slow and lacking in the air. It remains a mystery as to how he did so well in Scotland. He now has a chance to replicate his pre-Wycombe form at Motherwell but it is a disappointment that Taylor did not give him an opportunity to redeem himself.

In hindsight, Knight was a complete and utter waste of money. To sign someone for £50,000 and then release him eight months is very disappointing given the financial situation. Knight does not have the best of reputations at his previous clubs off the pitch so you can only assume that the diminutive frontman and his boss did not get on.
