THE City of London Sinfonia orchestra is coming to Wycombe for its ninth annual performance - after the council stepped in to help put on the show.

Future performances of the CLS concert series was put in doubt after the Arts Council England withdrew its funding from the 37-year-old orchestra.

But the shows will go on after Wycombe District Council and Orchestras Live - a body which promotes orchestral events across England - stumped up the cash to ensure the curtains could go up.

The CLS will be putting on three performances and a special family concert at the Wycombe Swan, with the first taking place in October, which will feature a new trumpet concerto.

In February they will return to the theatre to showcase the CLS string section and a performance from the BBC young musician finalist Sarah Williamson.

The final concert in the series takes place in May and will be conducted by Wycombe born Richard Hickox, the CLS's music director.

In addition to these three performances, the orchestra will also be putting on a family concert entitled Crash, Bang, Wallop featuring Brain Blessed as guest narrator.

The show also features Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, a compesition which aims to give children their first introduction to the sounds of the orchestra.

Adults and children alike will also have the opportunity to have a go with the instruments during a workshop before the show.

Interesting that this activity gets support for something which will have limited community interest but things are being made much more difficult for charitable organisations in the town that do good for a much broader part of the community to get funding.

This is very odd. I could understand it if the orchestra was based in Wycombe but from London?
Come on BFP find out how much has been given, that is the real story.
