A 21-YEAR-old High Wycombe man has been sent to prison for nearly three years after attacking his girlfriend with a meat cleaver.

Andrew Crowe attacked his 29-year-old partner and attempted to strangle her while she tried to escape from his Desborough Avenue flat.

The woman had to be treated at Wycombe Hospital for a two inch laceration to her neck, following the attack on January 24.

Crowe was arrested and charged the day after the attack and pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on the first day of his trial in July.

He was sentenced to 32 months in prison at Aylesbury Crown Court yesterday.

DCI Yvette Hitch from Thames Valley Police said the sentence was a "great result" and a "harsh warning" that the force takes domestic abuse very seriously.

She added: "We have been working with our partner agencies to encourage victims to come forward and we see this case as a very positive sign that victims trust the police to protect and support them as they break away from an abuser.

"In Buckinghamshire, we have a dedicated Public Protection Unit who specialise in domestic abuse and work very closely with a number of groups such as Women's Aid and Victim Support. If you are looking for a way out, the support is there to help you.

"There is no excuse for domestic abuse, so pick up the phone and report it.

"The force takes a robust approach in bringing offenders to justice and is dedicated to protecting individuals from dangerous offenders and looking after vulnerable victims. We will continue to take a proactive approach in preventing and reducing domestic abuse."

If you feel you are being subjected to domestic abuse, whether physical, emotional or psychological, call the police on 08458 505 505, or the National Domestic Violence Helpline 0808 2000 247.
