Residents call for action over travellers

RESIDENTS are calling for prompt action after around half a dozen traveller caravans invaded a Cryers Hill field for the second time this year.

The travellers set up camp on land at the junction of Hughenden Valley Road and Cryers Hill Lane on Thursday, causing fears that rubbish might be left at the site for a second time.

Hughenden Valley Residents Association, which represents homeowners in the area, is calling on the council to take action to remove the travellers quickly.

In May around 20 travellers' caravans set up camp on the same site - but were moved on in less than a week. Environment officers cleaned up rubbish left behind, including human faeces.

Dory Morgan, chairman of the association's planning sub-comittee, said she had contacted the county council and police after worried householders had telephoned her about the arrival on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

She said: "We are looking into it and working on it. I think most people get cross because it's our taxes that pay to clean it up and the valuable time spent to move that but that's life unfortunately.

"I think mainly its the mess they cause and the unsightliness."

She added: "The role of the residents' association is to protect and serve the residents and any concerns they have.

"We also believe in protecting the land around us especially the precious AONB and green belt."

Councillor Richard Pushman said he was hopeful of the same outcome due to an article four' planning condition, which prevents the land being used for anything other than agricultural purposes.

He said: "We have to have some serious thought about what we can do to prevent it happening again, unfortunately that piece of land is inviting.

"The county has a responsibility for travellers and groups. They have got rights as well as we have got rights."

Jospeh G. Jones, chairman of Thames Valley Gypsy Association, said lack of available sites meant travellers in the county had started to use new areas to stop.

He said: "If people are concerned about the potential for rubbish being left behind they should have a word with the county council.

"What forward thinking liberals do they provide them with a skip that travellers can put their rubbish into.

"The problem a lot of gypsies have is the type of vehicles they drive they will often be refused access to the rubbish dump."

Thames Valley Police spokesman Carley Sparrow said: "A neighbourhood inspector issued papers on Thursday night with local policy and rules and regulations of what they are allowed to do while they are on the land and seeing what they intended to do while they were there."

Yes, the Gypsies should not be at Cryers Hill but nearly all traditional stopping places on common land have been fenced/sold off and since the Tories abolished the Caravan Act of 1968 no new sites were provided. It is only now, with the new Act that new sites are being found. Too slow and too few many would say.
The old hint of dirty Gypsies with "faeces left on sites" really should be put right.
On legal sites they have toilets so no problem. On unauthorised site they have no toilets so what do you expect them to do ? Use the toilets in the caravans next to their cooking or sleeping areas. They are too clean for that and where would they empty it?
Portaloos and skips along with the eviction notice would solve that problem. Along with a bill for their hire would also be in order.

Hold on a minute Norman, we may be able to supply portaloos and skips but why should we? They have chosen to live in this way, but do not expect to deal with the responsibilities that come with the freedom that they enjoy and we defend.
It also may be 'in order' to provide a bill for the hire of these services, but do you really think we are stupid enough to expect it to be paid?
They could use a credit card or a cheque or even set up a direct debit payment eh.
Exactly, just as I thought, not a chance!

It isn' a fact of life. Most of these travellers have come over from Ireland and should be deported back as they have as much respect for the law as a common thief!
Gypsies are also from Romania.

Thanks Fred for not giving me a mouthful of abuse which is the usual reply when Gypsies are mentioned.
The first point is that we have taken away the freedom they used to enjoy by fencing off and selling the common land where travellers used to stay and not providing enough legal sites.
A few piles of rubbish and degradable human waste is no big deal compared to the problems in any town centre on a Saturday night but it give anti Gypsy people another chance to have a go.
As for paying by credit card etc. Tell me the bank that gives a cheque book or card to someone with no fixed address ?
Records can be kept for non payment and chased up with a summons if they ever turn up in the area again. Check the vehicles for owners name. The governemnt has got computerised records on all of us including Gypsies.
Probably far cheaper just to clear up after them as we do after a football match, carnival or parade. It is no big deal in comparison to rising fuel and food costs!
