Council apologises over fireworks mix-up
A COUNCIL which decided a charity must put down a deposit for one of the largest fireworks events in the area has apologised, after councillors realised they had been given the wrong information.
At last month's Hughenden Parish Council meeting it was decided that The High Wycombe Round Table should give a refundable deposit of £1,000 for the fireworks event at Four Ashes in Terriers.
This decision was based on information from Cllr Hugh McCarthy who said there were problems last year with litter and damage to a neighbouring fence.
But last night, upon further questioning from a member of the Round Table, councillors realised the damage could have happened years ago.
Graham Bradshaw, from the charity, said: "I am not here to try and change your mind but merely to understand your position.
"This was a bit of a surprise to us." Cllr Brian Swain said: "I did ask Hugh. I haven't got a complete answer back from him.
"The impression is that it didn't happen last year- it happened before that.
"It was, in fact, a situation that occurred at least two years ago."
He said the charity should not be asked to give a deposit as they have never asked for one before, and the decision was based on wrong information.
Cllr Nick Morris said: "I am a little disappointed. I feel I was slighty misled that this didn't happen last year or maybe even the year before.
"If I had known this I would have gone a different way. We should clarify the situation and maybe reverse that decision."
Chairman Roger Beavil asked Mr Bradshaw to give their apologies to the charity. Council procedure was discussed on whether councillors could reverse the decision last night.
After further talk it was decided that the matter could be brought under urgent matters and that the charity would not have to put down a deposit.
The High Wycombe Round Table is being held on November 2 at the Four Ashes Field, Kingshill Road, Terriers.
