Jailed ex-councillor's name to be axed from council chain
CONVICTED paedophile Bob Bate will have his name removed from the chairman’s chain of Hazlemere Parish Council.
HPC previously discussed the idea of etching Bate’s name out of its history books but decided to put the matter on hold, meaning they could not revisit the issue for six months under the council’s Standing Orders.
But the parish said they received an update from an official at Wycombe District Council which enabled them to revisit the matter last week.
Following a discussion, parish councillors unanimously decided to have the link bearing Bate’s name taken off the chairman’s gold chain.
HPC’s Vice Chairman Cllr Natasha Howard said the council had a “moral responsibility” to the parish to expunge Bate’s name.
Bate – a former Wycombe Conservative party whip – was caged in 2012 for three years after pleading guilty to the possession of thousands of pornographic images of children and animals.
During sentencing at Amersham Crown Court, Judge Simon Davis said: “These are the worst images I have ever seen...I have never seen images as horrible, moving and dreadful as these.”
Dudley resident Bate, who represented Wycombe District and Hazlemere Parish councils, was arrested following a tip off by the Bucks Free Press.
