A BUSINESS partnership has been handed £10,000 after being announced as a ‘Town Team’ by the Government.

The High Wycombe Business Improvement District Company (BID Co) has secured the funding from the Communities and Local Government.

The BID Co missed out on becoming one of Mary Portas’ Pilot towns, but due to an overwhelming response to that initiative - which saw more than 400 applications - the government launched the Town Team scheme.

Today, 300 Town Teams were announced, all receiving £10,000 towards a project they outlined in their Mary Portas application.

The BID Co will put the money towards its Grow an Entrepreneur for Tomorrow programme.

The idea is to secure a vacant unit in the town centre and turn it into a ‘pop-up shop’ for up to five groups of young people to launch their own ventures, with four key themes: fashion, food, art/culture and media.

The process will be documented and shared on social media in a bid to create an ‘educational legacy’.

HWBIDCo Chief Executive, Oliver O’Dell, said: "This project is about challenging young people’s perceptions of the town and allowing them to explore an opportunity to create their own business and to be their own boss.

"It is designed to work hand-in-hand with local businesses so that we raise their profile at the
same time rather than create any unfair competition.

"Who knows, we might even end up with some new long-term business ideas for the town and the next home-grown business tycoon.”

I think this is a fantastic idea.

An empty unit will be put back into use and the younger generation can try and make a go of something and do something positive.

Nice one :)

I doubt if this will do much for the town indeed at most it will put on the lights of one shop for a while but how many more will close around it?
~
'Town Team' doesn't have much of a ring to it either, 'Team Town' would have been better....

Mr. Cheerful does it again, Is there nothing that can be done to make you a bit more positive Ivor? Please stop denegrating my town.
This is very positive, it opens a unit up, gives help to young entrepenuers and show that the bid co is living up to its promises.
