Wycombe traders tell Tesco: 'No-one wants you here'

Wycombe traders tell Tesco: 'No-one wants you here' Wycombe traders tell Tesco: 'No-one wants you here'

LONDON Road shop owners have told Tesco “no-one wants you here” - as the food giant plans its eighteenth store in south Buckinghamshire.

The supermarket titans have submitted plans to Wycombe District Council to redevelop the former Platts garage and turn it into a 2,480sq foot Express store with nine parking spaces.

The firm says the new store at the Wycombe Marsh will create 20 jobs and that it is ‘looking forward to investing in the area and becoming part of the community’.

But neighbouring traders, fearful of their own futures, have told Tesco to pack its bags and drop its plans as the proposed store is not wanted.

Younus Mohammed, who owns the Costcutter franchise next door to the mooted Tesco, said: “My customers are not happy about it.

“They’ve got two supermarkets at either end of the road for people to do weekly shops - a corner shop is special for schoolchildren coming for sweets, emergencies and people looking to conveniently pay bills.

“If Tesco opens we would probably be forced to shut, I’ve got a bank loan to pay, the seven people I have will be without a job – but it’s the same for everyone.”

Tummy Fillers owner Jevan Kumar, who employs four people, believes Tesco would do more harm than good – pointing to the effect Sainsbury’s Local had on businesses in Flackwell Heath.

He said: “They say it’s going to create 20 jobs - it’s going to affect all the shops in this area, which is more than the 20 jobs they’d bring.

“There are nine parking spaces; where are there staff and customers going to park? There are not enough places for everyone as it is now.

“People will end up parking on the zig-zags and it will be chock-a-block on London Road with cars trying to get in and out, and past that shop.

“Budgens in Flackwell Heath lost about 60 percent of its business when Sainsbury’s opened, existing businesses here will be the same.

“Traders need to stick together on this – it’s going to kill our shops.”

Cllr Trevor Snaith echoed the thoughts of traders and is urging Tesco to drop the plan and plough its money into breathing new life into its dilapidated store in the town centre.

He said: “We have seen Tesco Express destroying trade in areas of ribboned development, not only does it destroy the food retailers but also the secondary businesses – your newsagents, fast-food, off-licences etc.

“I would rather they invested their time, effort and money into redeveloping their town centre store which, if they really went for it, would revitalise the town centre with new jobs and increased footfall.

“There is a place for Tesco – just not there in London Road. Especially when you consider the traffic problems and it would be right next to a junction fraught with danger. It’s a bad place.”

The ward member for Ryemead said he would be organising a public meeting in the coming weeks to discuss the matter.

"Tesco look forward to being part of the community"? Blimey. The reason we have the 1960s Tesco concrete monster in the middle of the Eden Shopping Centre is because Tesco refused to cooperate and be part of the Wycombe Community. Be afraid, be very afraid.

The real test of whether the local community wants a Tesco store or not will be whether people choose to shop there or not.

Tossco needs to clean up their drab, dingy, dirty stores on either end of Wycombe and staff them with people who don't mutter before anyone should approve anything they want.

Otherwise, point them to J4 and tell them to go away.

On the basis of all the negative comments I suspect that the biggest switch of trade will be from local people who do not allready use the Costcutter / Nisa stores and shop at the local supermarkets.

So stop the panicking and scare mongering and let them build and regenerate the derelict land, I dont see anyone else offering to.

"The firm says the new store at the Wycombe Marsh will create 20 jobs "

and how many jobs will be lost? I expect at best this will break even 20 in and 20 out

All negative comments not wanting the new store, but I bet that most of you will go there if it does open.

why not do something with the eyesore in the town centre first

limited stock, horrible building, useless staff!

for the 20 jobs that a new tescos will create, I would say the same would be lost from local independents. net result? same jobs on probably less pay and profits going to tesco head office not the local economy

If you are all so concerned about the local community and supporting the small local shops, then why do you care what the Tesco in the town in like.

I would go there. CostCutter, NISA etc are all massively over priced.

Half of them do not sell many of the things I want like a fresh loaf of bread (usually all cheap brands that are stale), a coffee, meal deals with nice sandwiches etc.

Unfortunately for them, Tesco does offer this and thats why I go there.

If they dont want them there then lower the prices, stock quality products and people will use your stores. Its simple really.

I also assume that all those with negative comments have realised that they are hypocrites and (rightly so) have decided to shut up and accept the new store.

If people don't sell things people want , they will go somewhere where they do sell what's wanted .
.
That's the main reason why Tescos failed in Greenland (Thule) when they wouldn't sell whale meat or blubber for ethical reasons.

Good point. No more Tesco stores in the District until they have cleaned up their existing eyesore!

LOL
you must have very low standards if you think Tesco sell quality stuff.
And I love the way you think that the small shops dictate what we want to buy.

How very patronising you are.

Where do you shop dahling? Waitrose yah?

Tesco is absolutely fine and sells plenty of good food, unless you are a snob - bless :)

The issue is as stated shops like costcutter, bestone etc do not sell any decent food for people.

Tesco Express etc do well because of meal deals, proper known brands as apposed to cheap rubbish nobody has ever heard of and of course you dont have to spend a minimum of £5 before you can pay on your card!

As stated, if these shops bucked their ideas up, lowered the prices etc they would be fine - but they wont and will go out of business. It's dog eat dog really!

Nope - I don't shop at Waitrose.
But I stand by what I say.
Tescos is a vile blot on the landscape and their food is not all that.
They rip farmers off, they destroy small shops all for the name of profit.
And as for these meal deals that you are so impressed with..

Try cooking from scratch -much cheaper and healthier.

Tesco is only "absolutely fine" if you don't care about the business ethics of who you give your money too.

Preferring not to give your money to companies that cynically use tax avoidance schemes, have an appalling reputation for exploiting their supply chain and time and time again use their financial muscle to subvert the planning process is nothing to do with snobbery.

Neither, for that matter is choosing to shop at Waitrose.

Yes Flackwell Heath is an excellent example to how these stores ruin other local shops.

In Flackwell several thousand people signed the petition and/or wrote to the council against the development of Sainsbury. The council were warned that businesses would be badly affected but the council believed Sainsbury line that it would enhance other shops. That is rubbish they do not enhance other shops, they take away from them.

Sainsbury will cite that in other areas little shops have stayed after the opening of their stores but what people fail to realise is that they have to stay as they all have leases. Average shop lease is 10 years long, you simply just cannot get out of these leases just like that.

Fact: Our shop in flackwell has lost 40% of business now. Despite being cheaper than Sainsbury.

It is not the fault of Sainsbury, they go where they expect money. The blame lies with the thousands of customers who said they would boycott it, gave us hope and then never boycotted it at all. It is some kind of Hypnotism.
I even saw one of our regular customers walk out of Sainsbury with goods he saw me and tried to hide what he bought from Sainsbury behind his back. It really is a stab in the back but we are forced to carry on just bleeding losses everywhere.

Slacker says...

So I say to Mr Mohammed it is easy to say now that nobody wants them here, but the reality is your customers will use them over you, even if you are cheaper. What you will find is customer will come to you to pay bills and then buy nothing else. Bills is not what keeps you afloat.
