20 food outlets in Wycombe score 'zero' on hygiene rating

TWENTY food outlets in Wycombe need to make ‘urgent’ improvements to meet food hygiene standards - according to a ratings system used by our councils.

This figure includes takeaway outlets, restaurants, shops and pubs which have scored ‘zero’ of out five in the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Firms are given a green sticker to display their rating in the window, but are not required to do this.

However, you can easily check the rating of almost every food business in the county on the Food Standards Agency website. The website includes the option to sort the results by rating - CLICK HERE

The scheme has now been running for several months in Wycombe, with 900 premises inspected to help people choose where to eat out or shop for food.

Currently 84 food outlets are rated as one out of five – indicating ‘major improvements’ are necessary. However, nearly 300 premises in Wycombe have scored a ‘very good’ five out of five.

Inspectors look at how hygienically the food is handled, as well as the condition of the buildings and how the firm records what it does to make sure food is safe.

Wycombe District Council, which operates the scheme, said some of the zero ratings reflect “a lack of a formal documented food safety management system”, while other firms may have made improvements since the last inspection.

Spokesman Nick Sykes added: “Where there are serious contraventions that pose an imminent risk to public health, we do take action to protect this (which can include closing the premises down).

“In all other cases we take the appropriate enforcement action to secure compliance in line with our protocol.”

Cllr Audrey Jones, the council’s cabinet member for environment said it is “vitally important that food is prepared and cooked in the correct manner”.

But asked if the council advises people to avoid firms with a zero rating, Mr Sykes said: “This is not our role, the scheme provides information to the public to allow them to make informed decisions.”

The South Bucks district has about 480 food outlets - just over half the total in Wycombe - but only 11 of those have been given a rating of zero or one [with three rated zero]. Chiltern has about 600 outlets, with 45 given the bottom two ratings [with two rated zero].

Its very well looking at this list and thinking to best avoid, just make sure you have all the facts. I looked up my local chinese takeaway, and was concerned at the score, so I requested a copy of the inpspectors report under the freedom of information act. There was nothing wrong with hygene or standards, "only" book keeping of some logs. Once this was implemented, they jumped from 1/5 to 4/5.

'The food safety officer inspecting a business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at:

how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe
At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings. The top rating of ‘5’ means that the business was found to have ‘very good’ hygiene standards. Any business should be able to reach this top rating.

The food safety officer will explain to the person who owns or manages the business what improvements are needed and how they can achieve the top rating of '5'. The local authority will check that these improvements are made.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme has been designed to make sure that the ratings given to businesses are fair.'

Im a little worried, i eat at several of the places that get a '0', yuk

Like anyone ever thought (or cared after a night on the beer) what the hygiene of your Doner Kebab or fried chicken supplier was.

Interesting that some pubs were mentioned and that book keeping can mark you down

Makes alarming reading if you click on some of the well known premises plus some of the little village stores.
We should all hope they've got the message and prohibition/closure orders are served if they persist when re-inspected.

Some of these food businesses / franchises (especially those using poisonous transfats in Wycombe town , Marlow etc and surrounding areas) exude such a foul revolting stomach-churning toxic stench that it's a wonder they actually managed to score even a zero.
.
Those outlets surely should get negative scores - reflecting the immediate danger people reckless enough to let any of that smelly evil slimy oozy stuff near any of their bodily orifices.
.
You can tell which ones they are by just observing them (from the outside) .. You don't need a degree in hygiene to work out or spot which are the unhygienic and dangerous ones.

No - zero stars is not adequate. Some of these places are an actual threat and instant danger to anybody foolish or innocent enough to frequent these places.
.
Currently with a zero rating these awful oulets can still carry on trading and selling their toxic products to the general public. A negative score would mean they had to immediately cease trading until they put things right and were subsequently re-evaluated
.
Currently that does not happen and the public is put at unnecessary risk of food poisoning or worse.
