Moo-vellous new view for Burnham Beeches
3:40pm Friday 21st December 2012 in News By Fredrica Bowkett
VISITORS to Burnham Beeches will soon be greeted by a colourful new sight when they stop at the cafe for a cuppa - the picture of a cow, sited on the cafe roof and designed by an eight-year-old school pupil.
Kieran, aged 8 from Stoke Poges School was presented with an award by the Lord Mayor of the City of London for winning a ‘Design a Cow’ competition.
The childrens' task was to design a cow, which will be scaled up to four feet, and will ‘live’ on the roof of the Burnham Beeches café. The competition was run by ‘The City of London Corporation’ in order to promote their ‘Grazing is Amazing’ project.
Alderman Roger Gifford, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, presented Kieran with his prize on his annual visit to Burnham Beeches.
Ten schools across the area took part in the competition, and the winner was selected by Burnham Beeches rangers and staff. Kieran was awarded with a dinner for five people- courtesy of the Crown Inn, an art box set, and a Burnham Beeches goodie bag. He said "It’s amazing- I didn’t expect to win."
This year celebrates the 132nd anniversary of the City of London’s acquisition of Burnham Beeches, and as is traditional every year, the Lord Mayor pollarded a young beech tree.
He added "I salute everyone connected with Burnham Beeches because they are doing far more than a job. They are keeping a beautiful piece of England alive - and more than that, keeping a beautiful piece of England thriving. And they are helping to make people happy - and there is no nobler thing than that."
