Cllr "miffed" at Risborough criticism

A TOWN councillor said he was "miffed" at an email which said Princes Risborough should have more shops and better parking.

Cllr Alan Turner said at Tuesday night's Princes Risborough Town Council meeting he was annoyed that the letter to the council put down Risborough, when in fact it is doing well.

He said there are now only five vacant premises in the town, which includes the office space by the market square.

Cllr Turner added: "If they ever visit the town I don't know. And with parking- we always say what we are trying to do.

"The email suggest we are not doing anything. I am flabbergasted."

The town council did not read out who sent the email.

It was pointed out that the town council do not have any say on which shops come to the town and parking is under Wycombe District Council's jurisdiction.

Cllr Bill Bendyshe-Brown said the Risborough Area Partnership is working to speak to the owners of the empty shops to see what their plans are.

He added that with Birtchnells they thought Italian restaurant, Ask, was being put forward but it was actually being put forward by the owner and now no-one seems interested.

He said there does seem to be a degree of buoyancy in the town and the Risborough Rewards card system has 1,500 users, which encourages people to shop in the town.

Yet it was the Town Council that introduced the stupid one way system and frankly dangerous bike lane that makes the High Street look like a traffic jam wasn't it?

Why have shops closed in Risborough? The same reason why new shops aren't opening in Risborough. People don't use them enough.

It is a story being replicated all over the country.

The one way system hasn't helped risborough, even one of the charity shops didn't last long.
I try and support the local shops but the thought of being stuck in traffic in the high street puts me off and I know of quite a few people who no longer shop in risborough because of the one way system.

Luckily enough I can and do shop in Risborough as I can walk to the High St.
However if I need to drive anywhere around lunchtime or 5 o'clock I have to allow 5-10 minutes for the one way system.
