Drugs and drink identified by new commissioner to cut crime

DRUNKENNESS and drugs have been identified as key factors to tackle in a new plan to cut crime.

Stamping down on excessive drinking and addressing addiction to drugs are fundamental to Thames Valley Police's efforts in the coming years, new Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld says.

And he says a large part of the responsibility for stopping booze related crime lies with councils.

Mr Stansfeld, elected in November to the newly created £85,000 per year job, is asking the public for their views in a consultation which ends on February 8.

In a document outlining his priorities, he said: “The majority of crime that directly affects the public is caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol, and the need of drug addicts to fund their addiction.

“Alcohol is a primary cause of violence, anti- social behaviour and, to a great extent, domestic abuse.

“Much of this crime happens within the late night economy. Licensing hours, and the control of the establishments that serve alcohol, are within the remit of councils.”

He said he will work closely with councils.

He said: “They have the responsibility to see that these establishments are properly run and are not the cause of drunken violence and anti-social behaviour.

“The police have the responsibility for preventing drunken behaviour descending into criminal behaviour but their ability to do this is a last resort, after the essential problem has been created.”

Former army commander Mr Stansfeld also focused on drug addiction, stating that addicts needing to fund their habit are responsible for many burglaries and associated violent crime.

He said: “The rehabilitation of offenders, whether in jail or outside establishments, is key to the reduction of household burglary.

“Nothing is more conducive to crime than the release of a persistent criminal back into public life without the cause of the criminality being addressed, either through deterrence or education, or ideally both.”

Mr Stansfeld, who was elected as the Conservative party candidate, also pledged cash to fighting rural crime.

“In the past the serious effects of this have been underestimated,” he said.

“It will now be tackled with the seriousness that the cost, both in financial and in personal terms, warrants.

“It is unacceptable to have gangs of professional criminals preying on isolated farming communities, and the workers and contractors who support this vital industry.”

How about corruption in politics?

How about answering why you employed one of your Tory friends on a £35,000 salary for a PART TIME job?

Drink and drugs are "key factors"... next breaking news: the Pope is Catholic, and quantities of ursine excrement have been found in wooded environments.

He obviously has overlooked cutting benefits, throwing people out of housing, increasing council tax on the benefit recipients, taking benefits away from disabled people, cutting the annual increase in benefits, homelessness, etc. But it is easier to simply continue with the existing system than look at the real causes of crime.

I urge everyone to contribute towards the consultation, which is apparently being done on the internet. I wonder how many letters they are sending to people about the consultation.

He has to save money from the public , so that he can pay his political / social mates undeserved unearned unwarranted salaries.

That money has to come from somewhere - so it has to come from the tax-payer - apparently.

What a load of cobblers !!
Why not use your influence to ensure those that are brought before the courts are properly sentenced .... keep them in jail longer .... that keeps crime off the streets and they certainly won't get drunk. Make community services WORK... why not chain gangs? Do you ever, anywhere, see people carrying out community service orders ... cleaning the streets, scrubbing graffiti ... They owe the community for their wrong doing .... Make a difference quickly or get out ... it really is time to make a difference.

Maybe he should concentrate on burglaries, there has been a spate in recent days in both Marlow and High Wycombe resulting in an OAP being assaulted in his own home. The trouble with that is you need resources to investigate crimes but a visibly drunk person can be issued with an £80 on the spot. Typical tories go for the easy target that won't take up to much time rather than real criminals who frighten people in their own homes.
By the way I like his picture such a wonderful example of the tory tweed dressing Daily Mail reader type.

I doubt that he reads at all. Even the Daily Whatsit. He far too busy issuing meaningless and pointless PR sound-bites.
.
For example he's just said (according to this paper ) “Alcohol is a primary cause of violence, anti- social behaviour and, to a great extent, domestic abuse.
.
Well I never , we would never have guessed that - what eye-opening wonderful words of wisdom - and all for £1600 a week (plus expenses).
.
He could be speaking from personal experience of course (allegedly) - Is it when he rolls home drunk from his club and knocks his family about in the early hours because his dinner has gone cold ?
.
We should be told.
.
Anyway he doesn't listen to ordinary folk - only to his mates down the club - you know the 'gizajob' lot.
