NEW CCTV cameras are one of a number of measures proposed in a plan for overcoming a problem with anti-social youths in a part of Marlow.

The surveillance footage devices could be installed around the Gunthorpe Road area after requests from residents.

A dispersal zone was in force from March to November last year, which gave police the power to ban suspected troublemakers from the area for up to 48 hours.

Red Kite Community Housing told the MFP that it is actively considering making a contribution to buying cameras, if that is what tenants decide they want to spend money on.

There is a mixture of former council houses and private homes.

Police are looking at CCTV as part of the solution going forward, a report created by Dr David O’Halloran, from Mediation Bucks, states.

The mediator said last week he is encouraged that reports of anti-social behaviour have fallen since his work with the youths began in November.

He said in his report: "Conversations with the youths revealed many of them to be friends who live and go to school in the area, and meet with other friends locally.

"Several of the youths are the children of the residents who are subjected to the harassment.

"They are aware that youths from outside the area make occasional visits to Gunthorpe Road and befriend, influence and coerce more vulnerable local youths into anti-social activities."

The teenagers turned down a meeting with police but compiled questions to give officers, and Dr O'Halloran said this was a positive move towards better relations.

He said: "These are early days in this ambitious project and there is still more work to do to restore confidence within the community."

Inspector Ray Wilks said: "The number of calls is drastically down, it's a combination of things and it doesn't mean to say we'll rest on our laurels."

Dr O'Halloran believes the dispersal order was counterproductive but Insp Wilks said: "At the end of the day we were there looking to solve a problem in the area and used any means in our disposal.

"We made good use of it and it had an effect on the number of calls we had. We continue to patrol the area."

Action planned in the report:

• Funding pledged for a fayre, to introduce the youth and the community to the many clubs and societies that already exist in the area.

• Youth workers Matt Woolley and Suzanne Osborne have made great inroads in meeting up weekly with youths in the area. Evening work on the ‘donkey field’ location is now made possible by the provision of mobile flood lighting.

• Discussions have taken place with Street Dreams charity to explore how they could act as an extended family to disadvantaged, disengaged and disruptive young people

• The county council Chilterns and Marlow Local Area Forum is funding a street sports project which is now underway and is currently recruiting young people in the area to qualify with a level one coaching qualification and a first aid certificate.

• The charity Addaction has also been invited to help those individuals who are struggling with drugs or alcohol issues.

• A 'youthspace' bus targeting young people who are not in education, employment or training to help with letter writing and cv construction as well as other skills.

• The Marlow Youth Centre has proposed to extend opening times

• MCF Community Church have renovated and equipped a double decker bus with games consoles and plasma screens.

• River Church and MCF Community Church are also planning a new youth club on Thursday evenings from February 28

what a load of cobblers !! ... try giving them a bloody good hiding !!! .... stop wiping their ar*es for Christ's sake. The softly, softly, bless their little hearts, charitable approach has been tried for years and what's the outcome ... increases in crime and anti social behaviour. It's not working .. use the law, arrest where you can and sentence to the max !! .. if they go to prison, they're off the streets .. problem solved .. it ain't rocket science. At some point, a law abiding citizen is going to flip and take the law into their own hands ... and you can bet they'll be prosecuted to the max!! .. It's time for change...

Wow, I am actually really pleasantly surprised at this proactive approach. I think that most of the present group of youths are a lost cause.. Sitting on a play bus is never going to replace getting high and dealing weed... But maybe it will help catch some of the next generation and stop the cycle repeating. The present 17 year olds are picking up younger kids to join their stupid little gang, if the younger ones are busy rather then hanging around with nothing to do it could be a winner! 'Stand Up For England' I do agree with you though.. Tougher measures for the animals on the estate are needed. Don't forget also that some of these 'kids'are 18 this year.. Adults not children anymore.....

"...try giving them a bloody good hiding!!!...." and who is going to do that?...you?, the police? And do you think it will end there? What if you accidentally kill a 14 year old? Revenge attacks etc...
ASB reports are down; the police have arrested the ring leaders and banned them from Marlow. They have returned as 'visitors', re-offended, been arrested and will go to court. This is where I agree with you... the courts are responsible for making the sentence fit the crimes but in many cases I think they let our community down with their leniency.
I agree with Marlow77. We are probably too late to do anything for the career criminals but the initiatives in the report might just provide an alternative to 'running with the pack'.

Can I just say..... says...

"the courts are responsible for making the sentence fit the crimes but in many cases I think they let our community down with their leniency"

I think most people agree here, including the police - who is going to change the courts??

Useless Police once again being useless at controlling children !!! It is simple enough to punish these offenders as they are a cause of harassment fear and alarm by giving them a custodial sentence. Afterall each police car is branded with the slogan of fighting the above.
There is such a simple solution of locking them up because there can only be a small number of these repeat offenders and this problem is being stretched by Marlow police for no reason what so ever apart from them being lazy and useless ! All the kids of Marlow are not involved in this, only a very very small handful, so why is it so hard to nail this issue. One answer could be that the Police force overall is simply useless, being rewarded and paid for failures, is institutionally corrupted and merely a money grabbing, waste of public resources !

I hate to poor a stinker on what is happening and the idea that ASB has gone down, but it has gone down since November in Flackwell as well and in my opinion this is down purely to the weather.

I guarantee that once the weather improves, the ASB will be back.

Some good ideas to at least try and improve things. Thank goodness that the police are trying to build relationships with the community rather than saying something like "it's the parents fault". Which, let's face it, is the root cause of the problem...and the least likely avenue that will be fixed.

Totally agree, this country's laws are a joke. Hard and effective is what we need not soft and pathetic! these scum, living off benefits, make real peoples lives a misery. They need to be locked up for good. They serve no purpose in life.

Trouble is this could easily be stopped all over the country. If this country stopped paying for people who have no intension of working and only breed because they can , due to the benefits system, most of these crimes would stop. Our problem is benefits as it allows undesireables to procreate and that is a bad thing.

The reason they are not hanging around outside is because they have upset the Downley boys who are coming to Marlow in large numbers to search them out!!! They are all big and clever to sensible teenagers ands old men... Not quite so 'hard' when these boys come down!
