Wycombe Cllr thanks parents with Hairy Bikers TV treat
4:32pm Wednesday 6th February 2013 in News By Simon Farr
A COUNCILLOR will be calling on the Hairy Bikers tonight to help thank her parents for their support and effectively saving her life.
Wycombe District Councillor Paula Lee, ward member for Micklefield, enlisted the gourmet skills of Si King and Dave Myers to treat her parents Alison and Gerald Harmsworth to a special day back in June.
The couple are picked up by a car outside their places of work and whisked off for a private champagne reception and a slap-up meal.
Cllr Lee said it was a gesture to her parents after their help before and after the premature birth of her son Dylan, who is now two.
She said: “I wanted to thank them for everything they’ve done for me. They told me it was the best day of their lives, it was amazing.
“I had to move back in with them at one stage and my pregnancy wasn’t great, my son was born three months early and my mum saved our lives.
“I rang her to say I was going to get the bus to Stoke Mandeville Hospital as I hadn’t felt the baby moving but she left work to take me.
“When I arrived, the hospital staff said my blood pressure was one of the highest they’d ever seen and my kidneys had started to fail. They said had I taken the bus, Dylan and I would have died on it.”
Cllr Lee said the High Wycombe couple had no idea about their surprise appearance on television and she fully expects her parents to watch the show – on BBC Two at 8pm tonight – through their fingers.
But Cllr Lee will not be able to watch it with them as duty calls in the shape of a council meeting – and she is fully expecting some friendly banter from her political peers.
She said: “My aunt actually works for the county council and she has been telling everyone about it, so I’m fully expecting it to be raised at some point or other.”
Roy Gigg Butchers based in Cookham also feature in the show tonight.
