Bucks council testing meat in local supply chain following horse meat scandal

COUNCIL officials are visiting food suppliers and butchers to test their beef in light of the national horse meat scandal.

Buckinghamshire County Council's Trading Standards service has started an extensive programme of sampling meat and meat products from local butchers and other suppliers, including those involved in the supply chain to schools in the area.

The council said although the Food Standards Agency is coordinating a sampling programme of national producers and retailers, it is important Bucks people can have confidence in the local supply network.

Trading standards team leader David Pickering said: "Trading Standards officers are visiting local premises to obtain samples of beef and beef products to test for the existence of both horse meat and pork contamination.

"We will need to wait for the outcomes of the testing and the results are expected in the coming weeks."

Trading standards officers will be working in collaboration with their colleagues in the district environmental health services.

We are lucky that Bucks still has any Trading Standards staff. Last time I tried to contact them over something I was referred to some other council in Essex or somewhere. I got the impression that there are no Trading Standards in Bucks any more. The Tory led government is/was looking at getting rid of the Food Standards Agency - a quango! Let us hope that the cost cutting madness does not mean we lose this valuable service.
