Council tax freeze rubber stamped

Cllr Roger Wilson Cllr Roger Wilson

THE final rubber stamping was given last night to a council tax freeze for Wycombe residents.

At a full Wycombe District Council meeting, members voted through the budget for 2013/14 – which includes capping the £126.99 per year charge for Band D households.

Finance chief Cllr Roger Wilson, Conservative, told the meeting the decision was made against the backdrop of people struggling in the harsh economic climate.

The Cabinet Member said: “"As a result, and in spite of these problems, it is our resolve to keep the council tax increase for the district at zero for this coming year.

“We must remember that it is your money that we are spending, to provide services for you, and we will continue to squeeze every pound until the last drop has been wrung out.

"We know that the future is very uncertain and that the continuing economic problems the country faces are having a very real and profound impact on the lives of our residents.”

They have not continued with council tax benefits for the poorest people in society though who will see council tax rises of an average of £300.00 per year (more than a Band D council taxpayer if you believe this report) with little or no avenue for finding the money. I expect the bad debts section of the council will need to employ tens more staff just to cope with the defaulters and the courts will be clogged up with hundreds, if not thousands of relatively minor claims by the council against unemployed people. This Tory led council is pathetic. Like the Tories in Westminster, they don't think things through properly.

Sadly this is just the wycombe council part of the council tax, still there is police, fire, etc. So this £126.99 actually means nothing to the end user, it is the final amount payable which is of concern to us.
