PUPILS at a Gerrards Cross school were given the chance to go mad as hatters on Friday to celebrate World Book Day.
The boys at Thorpe House School dressed up as their favourite book character, and enjoyed a day of literary-inspired activities ending in a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
Staff transformed the prep hall into an Alice in Wonderland scene for students to read, play games and eat cupcakes.
The Gerrard’s Cross Bookshop was also invited along so the boys could spend their £1 World Book Day token.
The event was designed to encourage reading and for students to see books as less of a chore.
Following the success of World Book Day, Thorpe House School are staging a ‘Readathon’ next week, where pupils will be sponsored to read as many books as possible in a week.
Teacher Chris Myers, who is organising the event, said: “Computer games, iPads and iPhones mean that for some children reading is not top of their agenda, so we decided to organise a day dedicated not only to reading but to using books to promote other activities.
“The Readathon will mean we can involve their parents too so they can share the pleasure of books with their sons.”
