Plans to demolish Amersham pub made

Under threat: The Pheasant in Amersham Under threat: The Pheasant in Amersham

ANOTHER Amersham pub could be knocked down to make way for new homes after plans were officially submitted.

The Pheasant pub in Plantation Road is now at risk of being demolished to make way for ten houses and four flats after a planning application was submitted to Chiltern District Council.

An Amersham-based company, Inland Homes, has made the application to the council.

The proposals have finally been put forward after several weeks of speculation amongst residents over the pub's future.

A decision on the plans is likely to be made by the council at the end of May.

Earlier this year the Red Lion in Chestnut Lane was knocked down, although plans to build houses on the land were later rejected.

Should the proposed demolition of the Pheasant go ahead it would leave the Boot and Slipper as Amersham on the Hill's only pub, although there are several more in the Old Town.

Should there be a question mark at the end of the last sentence in Andy Carswell's article?

Probably not Lawrence as he may well mean:

'If the proposed demolition of the Pheasant were to go ahead it would leave et cetera... '

Should this pub close it would surely call into question the whole future for pubs of this type in this country.
Nearly 50 years ago when I started using the pub it was a dear little no-frills inn which all age groups used to use. Given its location one would have thought that there was for such a place, but apparently not.

That's true about a lot of local pubs actually - we seem to be witnessing a social trend - the disappearance of local public houses.

The death of the public house like the post office and the village shop in the local community is a very sad fact of life and so called progress. Parish Councils and Local Communities should do more to make sure that these facilities do not go as they encourage social interaction and they are part of our heritage .

I suppose they are the property of large corporations and their interest is the bottom line.
