Bourne End community pub set to re-launch on Friday
A NEW era has begun at a community-owned pub after the first full-time tenants moved in last month, with a re-launch party taking place on Friday to celebrate.
The Garibaldi in Bourne End welcomed Steve Alexander and Christine Clarke on July 1, a year after villagers started a fundraising campaign to save the Hedsor Road pub from closure.
Previous owner Punch Taverns closed the Garibaldi claiming it could not afford to keep it open, sparking the ‘Save the Garibaldi’ venture which raised nearly £400,000 to buy and refurbish the business.
And after a recruitment search was launched following the exchange of contracts in February, shareholders plumped for Steve and Christine, who previously ran the community-owned Boot in Bledlow Ridge.
Steve said: "The reception has been excellent and everyone has been very welcoming. It’s exceeded our expectations for sure.
"The job caught our eye as we enjoy working with the local people being the boss, as it were. It’s not something everyone can deal with, having so many shareholders who want to have their say.
"It does feel like we’re giving something useful to the community, and it’s slightly more worthwhile than just pulling pints and passing them across the bar."
The pair got to work quickly, launching a full food menu which Steve said has been very well received.
And the re-launch party gets the new era underway on Friday evening, with live music and the grand unveiling of the new pub sign.
