Retired ex-soldier from Seer Green takes on Swiss Alps charity challenge
A FORMER soldier from Seer Green has no plans to slow down in his retirement, as he prepares to mark his 65th birthday with a solo trek across the Swiss Alps this month.
Richard Johnson, who is also a professional ski instructor, plans to traverse the 330km distance in just 15 days to raise money for Combat Stress, a charity supporting service veterans.
His challenge will see him climb over 18,000 metres and negotiate 15 mountain passes between Sarganes in the east of the country and Montreaux to the west.
And the former Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers corps sergeant will complete the trip solo and unaided, beginning next week.
He said: "It is certainly a gruelling challenge, but I’ve always been quite a determined person and if I can raise some awareness of a great charity then I’ll be happy.
I am an experienced hill walker and my snow sports experience means I can easily ski off-piste, so I’m looking forward to the challenge."
Combat Stress is the UK’s leading charity specialising in the care of veterans’ mental health, delivering treatment and support to those traumatised and affected by their time in service.
