Gerrards Cross landfill site set for public open day
A RUBBISH tip might not seem the most likely venue for a day out, yet the operators of a landfill site in Gerrards Cross are opening their doors to the public next week.
Veolia Environmental Services, which runs the Wapseys Wood Landfill Site on Oxford Road, is giving residents a look behind the scenes at what happens to their waste.
The event next Wednesday from 10am until 4pm is designed to show how a landfill site works and turns what goes in people’s bins into a resource.
During the day visitors will be able to take a tour of the active landfill site by minibus and see the ongoing construction of a new landfill containment cell.
Live falconry displays will also be on show with working birds of prey, which patrol the site to keep scavenging birds at bay.
Wapseys Wood Landfill Site covers 160 hectares and can accept up to 600,000 tonnes of waste each year.
John Barnes of Veolia said: “We think this is a great opportunity for our neighbours and local residents to come and explore what happens at our site.
“We hope people will come to meet us and gain an inside view on how we are working behind the scenes on their behalf.”
