New pub could open in Amersham
PLANS to convert a disused shop in Amersham into a pub have been welcomed.
The former Entertainer shop in Hill Avenue could be turned into a pub/restaurant after a planning application was made to Chiltern District Council.
If given approval it would see a reversal in a trend in Amersham on the Hill with two pubs, the Red Lion and the Pheasant, closing in recent months.
Applicant Dove Properties said in their application letter two firms are interested in operating the planned new business, adding: "Amersham on the Hill has no facility of this nature within the main retail area and we are convinced that this would improve the vibrancy of the area."
Brian Woods, chairman of the Amersham Action Group, said: "We think that the general idea could be of benefit to the town centre.
"The Red Lion and Pheasant were traditional pubs. I don't think this will be quite a traditional pub but it will give a level of social facility that I think we need."
Town and district councillor Mimi Harker said: "I'm fully supportive of the application as we are down to one pub in the top town now, having lost the Red Lion and the Pheasant. Residents need a hub for socialising and this will bring people into our town and will be good for the local economy."
George Allison from the Amersham Society said: "The Pheasant and the Red Lion closed down within the last year, which has left a dearth of pubs in Amersham on the Hill. In that respect it's a good thing they are going to develop the Entertainer."
But he added: "The only reservation I can think of is that parking is extremely difficult. There's a pretty grim shortage of parking spaces in top Amersham, as there is in the whole town."
The application states any new business would provide ten full time and ten part time jobs, although it does not say which hours it would be open for.
The proposal is for a change of use from a retail outlet to a drinking establishment and/or cafe/restaurant. Should the change of use be given approval next month, more detailed plans on how the pub would look would be made at a later date.
Since the Entertainer moved premises to Sycamore Road, the vacated store has been used to host an anti HS2 group and an exhibition on the history of the railway in Amersham.
