Rubbish collections being delayed until 10pm
WASTE crews have been out collecting rubbish until 10pm after a switchover to a new contractor, it was claimed last night.
Serco took over responsibility for collecting rubbish and recycling in the Chiltern district earlier this year and are set to do likewise in the Wycombe district in the autumn.
But it was claimed during last night's full meeting of Chiltern District Council crews had fallen behind with the collection service following the change.
Chris Spruytenburg, member for Asheridge Vale and Lowndes, said: "I have had reports of crews working until 10 o'clock. I can't substantiate that but I'm concerned and getting these stories.
"That has implications in terms of overtime, budgets, that sort of thing.
"One of them told a resident he was totally exhausted and so was his team, and he unburdened himself to this friend of mine. The council needs to know about this."
Peter Martin, the authority's cabinet member for waste, admitted: "We've seen incidents where crews have had to work late and teams appearing at 9.30, 10 o'clock, particularly in the early stages of the contract.
"Teams have been trying to catch up. They have had to work late but it's not normal procedure."
Seb Berry, member for Great Missenden, asked if any sanctions could be taken against Serco if their service fell below the level expected.
Cllr Martin replied: "We have a duty to monitor the contract and ensure what we've asked to be done, or whether the contract specifics are carried out.
"I believe we've got clear sanctions where performance isn't delivered."
