Bucks firefighters' strike action begins
A WALKOUT by Bucks firefighters will take place this afternoon, with four hours of strike action starting at midday.
The nationwide strike was called to protest over pension proposals from central government.
Bucks Fire and Rescue yesterday ended a dispute with union bosses and signed up to a national agreement that allows striking workers to return to work in the case of a major emergency.
The four hour period will be covered by a limited number of non-union members and firefighters who have decided not to join the walkout.
But fire chiefs are reassuring residents there will be a continuous service covering the county for the whole day.
Jason Thelwell, chief operating officer, said: "We are confident that our business continuity plan, with emergency cover being provided by firefighters who have made a commitment to work for the whole day, has enough capacity to allow us to deliver a safe level of cover across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes during the strike period.
"As on any other day, we would like to encourage people to take extra care to avoid the risk of an emergency."
