Rotary hands £20k to community run day centre
THE Rotary Club of Princes Risborough donated £20,000 to The Princes Centre on Monday night.
Rotarians have been fundraising for the day centre in Clifford Road, which provides day care for older and vulnerable residents and is also a venue for community events.
The centre in Clifford Road is run by a social enterprise, which rents the building off Buckinghamshire County Council at a peppercorn rent.
It is fundraising to raise £300,000 to buy the building and maintain services. The cheque of £20,000 represents the money raised during immediate past President Tom Winkworth’s year in office, which ended in June.
Mr Winkworth initiated the fund raising effort at the start of his year and many events, including the sponsored Black Prince Cycle Ride, contributed to achieving this total.
There was also a surprise for Mr Winkworth from fellow rotarians, as he was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his initiative and hard work on this and many other Rotary projects over the last few years.
The award is named after the founder of Rotary. Only 13 other members of the club have received this award over the life of Princes Risborough Rotary, which was founded in 1981.
Mr Winkworth said: "I was very pleased. These awards are not lightly given so obviously I have achieved something for Risborough.
"In all honesty I do what I do because I enjoy doing it. I get so much pleasure out of it. "When you get an award it is like the icing on the cake."
