Fish and chips shop opens at RAF base

Bucks Free Press: Fish and chips shop opens at RAF base Fish and chips shop opens at RAF base

MORE than £7,000 has been invested in a fish and chips shop at RAF High Wycombe- becoming the first of its kind across the RAF.

Last week the fish and chips shop opened its doors for the first time at the base in Walters Ash to its service, civilian and community personnel.

It was requested by personnel, following a junior ranks forum on camp.

Research showed the nearest takeaway of this kind was more than five miles away, which was out of reach for families and dependants without transport.

The station set out on a six month project investing more than £7,000 to create the new facility, built at the junior ranks’ mess but available to everyone.

The station's catering contractor, ESS, manager Paul Rumney said: "This is a great new community initiative; a fantastic facility that has shown what a great partnership is in place at RAF High Wycombe between the Station and ESS."

The shop will be open five nights a week, from Wednesday to Sunday, and open to all personnel and their families.

Aaah the traditional Fish & Chips shop selling battered cods soaked in salts & vinegars wrapped up in newspapers and reported on by meerkats. Simples, traditionals. Not in Englishes perhaps?

"becoming the first of its kind across the RAF".

I believe this statement is incorrect.

The airman's mess at RAF Stanmore Park opened a 'fish and chip shop' in the evenings, some considerable years previously.

Back in the days when RAF personnel worked in the kitchens, not a private catering company.

This may be the first run by a catering company, but definitely not the first to be run in an airman's mess.

According to some reports , RAF Stanmore Park closed down about 15 years ago.
.
It would seem highly likely they've all already had their chips there.

The unit was opened in 1939 and closed in 1997. In 1939 Balloon Command was established at Stanmore Park. The unit was built on the grounds of Stanmore Hall that was purchased by the Air Ministry in 1938 and the hall was demolished during the station development programme.

Now a housing estate, and yes, the mess there has definitely "had it's chips".
