Compleat Angler Hotel blasts Marlow weir hydro-power plan

Bucks Free Press: Marlow weir Marlow weir

TWO giant industrial screws which would generate electricity on Marlow weir for 400 to 600 homes would destroy the view, The Compleat Angler Hotel has said.

For the first time bosses at the Macdonald owned hotel have officially commented on the plans - and have come out firmly against it.

Management at the riverside resort fear it will wreck the beautiful scene that many of their guests currently enjoy.

And they are also concerned about noise.

Gaius Wyncoll, General Manager of the riverside Macdonald Compleat Angler Hotel, said: "Macdonald Hotels & Resorts was named 2012-2013 AA Eco-Hotel Group of the Year and as such we are sympathetic towards schemes that will enhance the environment.

"However, from the information that is currently available this project does not appear to be amongst them. The much admired view over the river from our award-winning restaurant and majority of bedrooms would be destroyed by the proposed Archimedean reverse-screw turbines and the sound is equally a concern.

"I am pleased there any many others who are opposed to the scheme and have this iconic view close to their hearts. We have had no dialogue to date from SEPEL (the developer) and have yet to see any drawings from them".

Campaigner Mike Post blasted the plans for 4.5 metre diameter Archimedean reverse-screw turbines on Marlow weir - to be positioned 30 feet from the Compleat Angler’s restaurant.

In a scathing attack, however, developer David Dechambeau, labelled some opponents "idiots and nimbys", saying a mock up image of how they claimed the scheme would look, created earlier this year, had wrongly influenced others.

The Environment Agency confirmed its continued backing for the project - and Mr Dechambeau.

Marlow's MP Dominic Grieve said he wants to see more details but can understand the concerns of those against it.

I'd want to see exactly the same machine in operation at high power to assess the noise and vibration levels.

I agree with you marlowbucks. They know this is a bad deal for them and I don't blame them.

This is one sure way to muck up the view and aspect that Marlow and Bucks shows of its self to the World.

We have car parks filled by coach loads of tourists coming to see the town and view the Bridge and River and this is one sure way of killing this industry stone dead.

There is a place for green energy but this is a bad design and a bad concept for something that could and should be done to blend in with the current scenery but as usual what the public says will no doubt be treated as a joke by the uniformed. Wrong some of us know exactly what we are talking about and some of us know a number of ways of producing Clean Green energy without sticking an eye sore and over sized waist of metal in to the middle of what is currently a big factor in Marlows Local Summer economy.
