Hydro-power opponents are "nimbys and idiots" claims developer

Bucks Free Press: Hydro-power opponents are "nimbys and idiots" claims developer Hydro-power opponents are "nimbys and idiots" claims developer

THE developer behind the hydro-power scheme for Marlow labelled opponents "idiots and nimbys" in a withering attack.

David DeChambeau, MD of Southeast Power Engineering, has blasted campaigners against the idea, saying that opinions are being formed based on erroneous mock up images of what the Archimedes Screws would look like.

Responding to the Compleat Angler Hotel's criticism, he told the Marlow Free Press: "Unfortunately the only thing that the folks at the angler have seen is photo montages created by nimbys in the area, they haven't seen anything about the design and I haven't talked to anybody at the hotel yet.

"All they have seen is these photo montages put together by idiots, basically. "There's a couple of nimbys in the area that have cut and pasted turbines on the weir in a location where they're not going to go and also in a configuration in size that they won't be."

He insisted his design of the turbines will not be ugly.

He said :"We're at stage one. As we get a proper set of plans together rather than these photo montages from the nimbys we can hold consultations to show what it will actually like."

He has promised to spend big to win over the public, possibly over £2m.

He wants to show "the facts, not the fantasies" and encouraged anyone concerned over noise to visit his Windsor turbines.

He will be inviting Compleat Angler bosses to see these. Based on the initial meeting earlier this year in Marlow, he said support has been overwhelming and he believes opponents are in a minority.

An Environmental study is being worked to obtain an extraction licence. A topography survey will follow.

But the scheme is unlikely to be up and running any time soon, with Mr D admitting his other hydro-power schemes, such as in Northern Ireland, which are further developed, are taking most of his time.

SEPEL have an exclusivity agreement to explore the scheme. Environment Agency chief Stephen Naylor said there are no deadlines as such or strict cut off points where the agreement would end.

He said: "The intention is if they didn't do anything then we could offer it out but we're not in a great rush.

"If we talked to David and he said 'actually, I don't think I'm going to get round to it, or I'm not actually that bothered' then we'd say 'well, that's okay, that's fine, we'll see if there are others out there who are interested'.

"There's no real need for us to drive things forwards and there's no real need to kick him out and gets someone else on board."

He expressed confidence in Mr Dechambeau's ability to see the project through, saying: "He's demonstrated he's got the team and the capabilities to install it so I don't think there are any problems."

LOL - now there’s an interesting strategy... call Marlow residents 'idiots and nimbys'!! Like that’s really going to get people on your side and not get their backs up...

Good luck with your project Mr DeChambeau - I think that you are now going to experience just how wrong that you are in your stance and how you have underestimated the good folk of Marlow. BIG time! I shall watch with interest at the development of your plans…

Say goodbye to the tourist industry in Marlow. We fort **** hard to stop tower blocks and now we get shafted by the con job they call green energy.

Someone should look at how much energy goes into making this lump of metal and take a step back and think - will it produce more power over a longer period than a water wheel located on the Lock side of the weir out of plain sight or a series of hidden smaller turbines under the main sluice gates. even a properly installed heat pump would provide more power but as we all know - the powers that be will only look at option one and anything else will treated and as wrong.

Someone should also ask him how many people go out of there way to look and photograph the Windsor Weir - the answer is probably None. Then look at how this will affect Marlow and its tourist industry because unlike Windsor we don't have Royalty or a Castle to fall back on.

Methinks Mr DeChambeau attended the wrong charm school, hope he can claim his fees back. Maybe he could try his hand at being the Diplomatic Ambassador to North Korea soon because there's no way he's going to be getting that hydro built at Marlow. He also has the commission to build one at Bell Weir, Egham and Viaduct Weir on the River Mole and he's just been truned down for part of European Grant worth £940,000, no wonder he's a little bit 'on edge'.

In fact, he's had these commissions now for more than two years and nothing, but nothing has yet been done. The EA siad that his progress would be measured against 'milestones', I wwould suggest 'light years' would be more appropriate with him. Sadly, the threat still hangs over the beautiful town of Marlow for the time being, but sleep easy in your beds, dear residents. Like I said, it just won't happen!

I would be tempted to support any hydro-electric initiative but to dismiss people's concerns as being Nimyism and idiocy means that I won't be supporting the likes of DeChambeau.

If £2m were spent susidising the installation on low-energy LED light bulbs in homes and offices, I suspect more energy would be SAVED than this proposed thing will GENERATE. Despite the Feed-In-Tarrif sibsidies (FITS) which it will attract.

We are not worrying about this 'developer' who chooses to abuse and name-call the people who oppose his money-making schemes.
.
Do you recall the Wycombe Wanderers owner who said similar things about people who opposed the his massive , unnecessary badly costed , badly funded green belt development between Marlow and Wycombe ? And publicly and vigorously supported by the then leaders on Wycombe Council too when he asked for a £80,000,000 loan out of the rates/council tax.
.
At least the proven crook, gangster and 'developer' , Al Capone , did not asked for a multi-million loan from the Chicago Authorities to subsidize his social 'clubs ( ie illegal drinking dens , brothels , drug running and gambling joints etc).
.
But poor old Al did complain that some Chicago residents were 'Killjoys' , selfish and against 'Progress' when they objected to his various commercial exploits.
.
Still he ended up in prison , didn't he ? But ironically not for screwing the citizens of Chicago , like he and his political friends did. It's a funny old world.
