MP concerned over Marlow weir hydro-power
MARLOW'S MP has expressed concern about the proposed hydro-electric scheme on the weir but says it is not clear if it will damage the iconic scene.
Asked if he agreed with The Compleat Angler Hotel's statement that it will 'destroy' the view at the natural beauty site, he said: "I don't know enough about the proposal to know whether that will happen or not."
But he added: "I certainly have a concern about it. Yes, I agree with them (those concerned), I think the location of the weir as it stands at present, with the town on the other side and the greenery on the Bisham side is an extremely attractive piece of landscape.
"What is quite unclear to me is whether putting this hydro electric scheme would damage that or not."
Mr Grieve has not been involved with discussions and has not seen any plans so far.
He wants more information to come out but on a general point about that form of power, he said: "If you can carry out small scale energy generating schemes using hydro electric power then great.
"But I know a bit about this from walking in Scotland that hydro-electric schemes don't necessarily come without environmental costs for all sorts of reasons. Firstly because of the infrastructure you have to put in.
"Partly because they may disrupt the natural flow of the rivers.
"I would say in context of the Archimedes Screw I would've have thought that would be unlikely to happen. "It doesn't require the pooling of water, just passing some water through a screw. But this is why the detail is going to be so important."
