THE Union Flag and Buckinghamshire County Flags are today flying at half mast outside County Hall and the County Court in Aylesbury, following the death of South African statesman Nelson Mandela yesterday.

Carl Etholen, Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council, said: "Nelson Mandela’s understanding and forgiveness made his fight for peace, justice and freedom even more remarkable.

"He was an inspirational leader not just for his country but also an example for all world leaders to follow.

"I believe in the importance of recognising the passing of such a great statesman by flying the flags at half-mast to mark the County Council’s profound respect for all that he did. He will be sadly missed by millions of us."

The flags will remain at half-mast until 8pm on Thursday, December 12.
