Beaconsfield boy tipped for Xmas chart success

BOOKMAKERS are tipping a Beaconsfield boy for stardom as his bid for the Christmas number one single gathers pace.

Coral and William Hill slashed the odds on 11-year-old Fynnjan Leach-Verhoeven reaching the top spot after he was featured on ITV’s Daybreak and in the Sun newspaper and his song played on Radio 1.

The Seer Green CE primary school pupil, who suffers from Asperger syndrome, wrote 'The Spirit of Christmas' in his head, despite not being able to play any instruments or ever having shown an interest in music.

And with odds of 16 to one to achieve the feat, Fynnyan’s mum Su Verhoeven hopes Fynnyan can go all the way and become the youngest person ever to write a coveted Christmas number one.

She said: "This is the only contender for Christmas number one that is not backed by a big record company.

"This is just one small boy with Aspergers who wrote a song to help other children. I'm very proud of him.

"I hope we can go all the way to the top. We've had support from as far away as Ireland, Italy and America, but we need local people to back it.

"Every time someone downloads the song, it's a step closer to Christmas number one."

With help from his father’s band and fellow year-six pupils, Fynnyan recorded the single and filmed a music video with help from students at Bucks New University.

Fynnjan has Asperger syndrome, a form of autism which affects how he makes sense of the world, as well as how he communicates with, and relates to other people.

He has above average intelligence but like many with the condition, takes things very literally and has sensory difficulties.

Fynnjan said: " I wouldn't exactly say that I'm finding the media attention any easier, but I am getting a bit more used to it.

"I don't want to be a pop star, but I know I have to do interviews to tell people about the important causes that will benefit from the song."

If successful, Fynnyan will usurp US pop star Taylor Swift as the youngest person to top the charts with a self-penned song at Christmas.

Proceeds from sales will be shared between the National Autistic Society and Nordoff Robbins music therapy.

A small percentage will also go to help special education needs provision at Seer Green Primary School.
