The year is almost over, so what better way to see it out with a bang than to have a dramatic change? But rather than just go with a new style, how about getting the 'wow factor' with a new colour? Here colour expert Gail Leadbetter from Albemarle haircutters in Beaconsfield gives her tips on how to work the latest trends.

This festive season reflects the winter 2013 catwalk trend of metallics. Gold, bronze, silver and platinum are all used to create sparkle and glamour. A flash of colour can add drama - and be as bold as you dare! Why not treat your hair to the full salon experience before a festive night out? A 3 step K Pak rejuvenating treatment will revive tired winter hair, followed by a professional styling session to achieve this year's 'Romantic, Decadent or Dreamy' looks.

Moving into 2014: This will see an emphasis on simple colour and healthy hair. Colouring trends are shifting from the summer’s bold contrasts, towards a more natural ‘ombre’ effect, a subtle shading effect from dark to light, using gentle tone on tone colouring. Colour can be used to create the illusion of thicker hair, by using layered colouring effects. For example using a lighter colour on top sections can create a fuller look. Expect an all over colour effect to last four to six weeks, partial hair colour techniques require less maintenance.

There are hot new colours for every shade this winter. Achieve ‘Bronde’, the perfect warm brown/blonde combination by using flickering gold and ambers on light brown hair. And brown hair is not boring! Use a semi permanent colour to darken to a rich espresso brown or glossy cinammon, or add subtle caramel highlights for a more textured effect.

To keep coloured hair healthy it is essential to use a colour safe shampoo and conditioner, which is ideally sulphate free, and will prevent fading and tonal change.

Modern high performance styling products help achieve fuller thicker hair at home. Get shine and bounce on longer hair by applying K Pak thermal design foam, using a hairdryer to lift the roots, then finish with large rollers or a curling wand.
