FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man from a third-storey flat in Amersham this morning after a fire broke out in an adjacent flat.

Crews from Amersham, Chesham and High Wycombe were called to the fire, at Chiltern Heights in White Lion Road, shortly before 3am.

Group manager Neil Boustred, head of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's community safety team, said: "Crews were faced with smoke issuing from a flat on the top floor, with an occupant of the adjacent flat on his balcony.

"Firefighters brought him down to safety, and he was treated for smoke inhalation by an attending ambulance crew.

"The occupant of the flat which was on fire was outside his flat when firefighters arrived. Following the evacuation of three people from adjoining flats, it was confirmed that everyone was accounted for."

About three-quarters of the flat was damaged by fire, and the whole flat was damaged by smoke.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a jet and a hose reel to put out the fire.

An investigation is being carried out into the cause of the fire. Firefighters carried out a reinspection at 9.30am.
