A Beaconsfield Alzheimer’s Society group is celebrating its fifth year of bringing smiles to the faces of sufferers through song.

‘Singing for the Brain’ is a programme developed by Alzheimer’s Society which promotes communication, articulation, concentration, focus and motivation through singing and meets at the Fitzwilliam Centre in Beaconsfield.

Sally Pierce and her late husband Roy were founder members of the group in January 2009 and both saw benefits.

Sally said: "Very quickly Fridays became the best days of the week for Roy and the days when he would be up, dressed and ready to go.

"He said to me several times how much better singing was than the other activities he took part in."

Specially trained helpers deliver a varied programme of vocal exercises along with songs from different eras and styles.

Along with the helpers the group also relies on volunteers to join in and make the group as enjoyable and as beneficial as possible.

Sally added: "In memory of my partner Roy and to support successive groups of people living with dementia I am now a volunteer helper here at Beaconsfield Singing for the Brain."
