Wycombe's Mayoral honour won in lucky dip

Bucks Free Press: Cllr Khalil Ahmed Cllr Khalil Ahmed

THE future Mayor of High Wycombe says it is an honour – and a huge relief – to see his name picked out of a hat to win the mayoral race.

Cllr Khalil Ahmed will succeed Mayor Cllr Trevor Snaith after the closest of races with opponent Cllr Brian Pearce on Tuesday night.

They were locked at 11 votes all and so the casting vote went to Mayor Snaith - but he could not split the pair, who had been nominated by their fellow Charter Trustees, so he opted to draw their names out of a hat.

Lady Luck was clearly smiling on Cllr Ahmed, as it will be he who wears the Mayoral chain in May.

Cllr Ahmed said: “The adrenalin certainly kicked in, it was an edge of your seat moment!

“I was prepared to accept whatever result came out; Trevor couldn’t decide so felt it was the fairest way to decide it and I have the upmost respect for Brian but I’m obviously delighted it was my name.

“It’s a great honour to have the chance to serve the town as mayor.”

The Labour councillor for the Disraeli ward said he had not yet had any thoughts about what events, initiatives or charities he would like to support during his mayoralty but plans to shadow the current mayor.

He said: “I’ve not yet made any plans but I plan to spend a bit of time with Cllr Snaith to get a flavour of what to expect as mayor and to pick up a few ideas. I’m really looking forward to it.”

It is the second time Cllr Pearce has missed out on a post on the drawing of names out of a hat. He lost out in the 2007 district elections to Val Razzaq after five recounts.

He said: "I had butterflies in my stomach - it's disappointing but I understand why Trevor did what he did. I wish Khalil well next year and went to shake his hand after the meeting."

Mayor Snaith said: “I have a lot of respect for both of them, I think they would both do a great job and so drawing out of a hat and leaving it down to luck was the fairest way to do it.”

This Bucks Free Press report, authored by Simon Farr is intriguing but also puzzling to some readers.
Q. What 'mayoral race' or 'closest of all races' was involved here? Someone please explain?
Q. Isn't it just nomination(s) by the ruling local majority party, junta, clique, alliance, versus the rest of councillors, deemed eligible and of sound mind, to vote for this honorary,
correct me if I'm wrong, pretty non-executive, ceremonial position? Mayor of High Wycombe.
-Ruling party, 'junta' etc., tokenly cedes honorific post, its functions strictly circumscribed,
to 'respected opponent', one year in five, maybe.
Q. Why is the political party affiliation of just ONE individual in the latest so-called 'mayoral race' mentioned, in your report, but not the affiliations,- appropriately, if any - of
the other 'contenders' - were there any?
- Story published online at pm Saturday, Jan 24 2014.
Q. When did this secret conclave actually meet, before that? Same week?
Q. When did the 'election' actually take place?
Q. May have missed it, but was there a list of candidates in this 'mayoral race' prior-aired, by
either Bucks Free Press, or publicised readily available by High Wycombe Council itself? Thought not.

Q. -
Is it in the Newsquest stylebook, to advocate or allow such gratuitous guff reportage-instances as:
'Lady Luck was clearly smiling on Cllr Ahmed, as it will be he who wears the Mayoral chain '
Q. The 'race' in your coverage of 'mayoral race' was not perhaps wholly 'mayoral'?
Q. Any impelling reason to declare this result, if important, in any degree, so way past the event?
Q. Who wrote the copy? A hasty amalgam, perhaps. Shoved in by an interested party?
Comment
The end product, as published, just raises more questions than it informs.
Deary, deary me.

Kindly elaborate on following. Your assertions
1) 'that's a fact' full corruption allegation regarding Wycombe District Council ,
This is serious stuff and I'm sure that they are quaking.
and
2) of your allusion to an individual 'our friend mr (name given)', in this full corruption, WDC context.
3) Put up, or shut up.
Thanks,

These Councillors if that is what they profess to be. Have not Elected a Mayor. The Rules are that a Mayor is Elected ! .This has not happened !. It does not matter who wins this Election, but an Election it must be,It does make you wonder what other decisions are made in such a flippant manner. You do not hold a Lucky Dip too make decisions. The person that came up with this idea, should seriously consider if they are cut out to make decisions on behalf of the people of High Wycombe . " Not Fit For Purpose" springs too mind . I feel quite sorry for the person that won this Lucky Dip because he has not been "Elected" to the post of Mayor .He may be known Mr. Unelected Mayor !.
