SCHOOLCHILDREN celebrated the opening of a new multimedia learning centre last week which focuses on helping those with special behavioural and learning needs.

The ‘Log Cabin’ room at St Peter’s Primary School in Marlow has been paid for using cash raised by PTA members and a grant from technology company SPA.

The colourful learning centre is equipped with interactive whiteboards, laptops and tablet computers to offer extra learning tools for those most in need of a helping hand.

PTA chairman Debbie Glennon helped organise the fundraising and completion of the Log Cabin.

She said: "It’s is not a classroom as such, but an extra resource and somewhere for teachers to give pupils extra help.

"It is in the old music room which had became obsolete, so we looked around at what other schools had and realised it was an important resource for the school to have.

"Holy trinity school have got something similar and were very helpful and supportive.

"It’s been a long project in the making and it’s just great to have it open and available for the children, and for the teachers to be able to take children aside for help with reading or phonics."

PTA members threw a ball in late 2012 to help get the idea off the ground, and have since put over £3000 towards the project, which cost around £9000 in total.

International technology firm SPA, which has an office in Maidenhead, stumped up a £6000 grant towards the room as part of its community programme.

Marlow Mayor Suzanne Brown arrived at St Peter's on Friday to officially unveil the Log Cabin.

the Prospect Road school has around 200 pupils and Mrs Glennon said they will all benefit from the new facilities rather than just those with special educational needs.

And the PTA chairman, who also has two boys at the school, said she is hopeful others in the community can take advantage of the new space.

She said:"All the children at school will benefit but if it can help support the community then great.

"We already have groups using our music room and the log cabin would be a really good space for book groups, sewing groups and lots of others to use."
