Rye hit by floods yet again

Bucks Free Press: Kenzo the dog plays in the rain - picture by Anita Ross-Marshall Kenzo the dog plays in the rain - picture by Anita Ross-Marshall

IT may be causing no end of problems for much of the country but at least these dogs are having fun in the floodwater on The Rye.

The recreation ground has yet again been hit by flooding as the River Wye comes close to bursting its banks.

The surface water is inches deep in places – these pictures were taken by BFP photographer Anita Ross-Marshall at the park this afternoon.

The Rye is frequently hit by flooding during any heavy period of rain but today the waters have been at their highest in recent memory, with concerns growing from nearby residents of Bassetsbury Lane.

A weir has been built near to Bassetsbury Manor to slow the flow of water downstream to alleviate flooding in Bassetsbury Lane and Chestnut Avenue .The water that is held back travels through pipes onto the Rye via grated sumps. Years ago when the river level became high the water came over a concrete wall and flowed into the paddling pool by the swings , when the paddling pool was full the Rye flooded by the playground .Its all swings and roundabouts really , and there you have it in a nutcase !.

If the weir is blocked it will then flood the Rye , the river overflow system is above the weir , if the weir is blocked as you say then no water will travel down to Bassetsbury lane the water will just flood the Rye. If the blockage at the weir is removed then perhaps flooding would occur in Bassetsbury lane and Chestnut Avenue .Lets hope this does not happen !.Roll on Summer lets have a hosepipe ban.

Keep dogs out of riverwater - you are risking your dog's life. The water is contaminated with rats' urine and can cause the terrible Weil's didease.

Flood plane doing its thing. Impressive how they've made a holding tank to reduce the flow. I often wonderd why the sluice by the manor was there but when you see the lake that is there now, it makes complete sense.

By using your analogy you should not take a dog out at all ! Rats are one of the most prolific breeding species known . Rats have no control over their bladders , wherever a rat goes he leaves a trail of urine, possibly contaminated with Weils Disease . When you are out and about with your dog there is always some risk of catching something . Ticks for instance can carry Weils if your dog has a Tick latching on to it ,you should remove it asap. Please do not forget you are never more than about twenty feet or six metres from a rat . Happy Dog Walking !

We do wish that flood plane would go where it is really needed - eg flying over the fires just outside Sydney or in Botswana.

One has to allow for how long it takes to put a big bush fire out. These disaster things take time to deal with , you know - ask The Environment Agency

Sorry they have not managed to manufacture a vaccine for Weils disease as far as I know ,If you or your dog becomes infected with this awful disease ,you have to be treated with antibiotics ,I understand that you cannot be treated twice. I do not know why that should be. I think I did know but I have forgotten , well thats my excuse! .
