A NIGHTCLUB was spared from the bulldozers by just a single vote - while council bosses also decided to save a pub at the same meeting.

Winkers Farm nightclub in Chalfont St Peter survived the axe by the narrowest of margins, as councillors voted 5-4 against plans to knock it down to make way for housing.

And proposals to partially demolish the Grade Two listed Pheasant pub in Amersham were also knocked back by Chiltern District Council's planning committee, who voted against turning that into housing on Thursday.

Developers had put forward proposals to demolish the nightclub buildings at Winkers to make way for five new houses.

A total of 11 letters of support for the plans were received by the district council - but Chalfont St Peter Parish Council objected and a Facebook campaign group was joined by hundreds of people.

The Denham Lane nightspot was given a stay of execution as councillors went along with their officers' recommendation to refuse permission.

But the plans to redevelop the Pheasant were easier to turn down, as committee members found no fewer than eight reasons for refusal.

They ruled there were no plans to replace the lost community facility and the design and siting of the new dwellings would "appear as a visual contradiction with the listed building" and were "noticeably and uncharacteristically smaller than the plots located in the immediate vicinity".

Councillors also noted there was no legal agreement to deliver the two planned affordable housing units and renovation work could lead to "substantial harm to or total loss of significance of a designated heritage asset".

The pub, in Plantation Road, has not been open to customers since 2012 but last week survived its second attempt at a possible conversion into housing.
