AN appeal for spare sewing machines by a Chesham charity group has been answered by members of the Amersham Rotary Club.

Two weeks ago the Bucks Free Press appealed to readers to help the Workaid charity in their bid to find unwanted sewing machines to send to east Africa.

Members of the Amersham Rotary Club saw the story and responded by donating spare machines, which will now be shipped out to Africa to help families set up their own businesses and raise money to pay for food and their children's education.

Workaid general manager John Fox, pictured above with Amersham Rotary President Roger Wyborn and volunteer Maggie Smith, said he was delighted by the results of the appeal and was very grateful for Rotary’s response.

He added: "There is still a need for more manual machines and I hope that people will continue to search cupboards and attics."

Call Workaid on 01494 775220 if you would like them to collect a machine.
