A YOUNG singing star is hoping he has done enough to win a role alongside opera star Bryn Terfel.

Tenor Alexander Aldren from Penn took part in auditions for a performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway smash hit Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The great bass-bartione, Bryn, will lead the cast at this summer’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Alexander travelled to Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre to take part in the auditions. The roles to be filled are star-crossed young lovers Anthony and Johanna and street urchin Tobias Ragg.

Alexander, 24, is studying for music in Birmingham and would love to follow in the footsteps of Bryn into opera.

He auditioned for the part of Anthony and said: "A friend saw the story about the auditions in the paper in Cardiff where my grandfather lives and thought I’d be good for the part.

"I decided to apply for the experience and it’s been great and when I saw that it could mean singing with Bryn Terfel I just jumped at the chance.

I do sing mostly opera and I’d like to be an opera singer but I have done some musical theatre and am currently singing Tony in West Side Story in Coventry."

A shortlist will be drawn up from over 80 young singers performing at the auditions, in Cardiff and at the Royal International Pavilion, in Llangollen, on Saturday, March 8, so Bryn can choose the three young unknowns who will take the stage alongside him.
