BUILDING work can now begin on a new housing development on the site of a former college after plans were formally approved.

The principle of redeveloping the now disused Chesham campus of Amersham and Wycombe College was agreed by members of Chiltern District Council’s planning committee last year.

The proposals still needed to be ratified by the Secretary of State despite being given the thumbs-up by councillors – and the green light was officially given this week.

A total of 45 dwellings – made of a mixture of 18 affordable flats and 27 four-bedroom houses – can now be built on the site, off Lycrome Road.

Previous proposals for 52 homes, of which 21 would be affordable, were turned down by the council.

The development will also see a playing field retained and new changing facilities created.
