Council to plant poppies for WWI centenary
POPPIES will be planted in Marlow town centre later this year to commemorate the outbreak of World War One.
Marlow Town Council has agreed to work with contractors to grow the flowers as part of its summer planting scheme near the war memorial on the Causeway.
It is part of a nationwide initiative to place poppies at key locations throughout the country to mark the start of the conflict, which began in August 1914.
Poppies have become a universal symbol of the devastating war, with the flowers blooming amid the carnage of battlefields in France and Belgium and adopted by the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal for servicemen and women.
