Fern Britton worried about current situation at Holmer Green Senior School

Bucks Free Press: TV star concerned over "dangerous and frightening" situation at daughters school TV star concerned over "dangerous and frightening" situation at daughters school

TV star Fern Britton spoke of her concern over the "dangerous and frightening" situation at a school as a host of worried parents voiced their concerns.

Holmer Green Senior School in Parish Piece, has been criticised in recent months as it attempts to rebuild after an Ofsted report in January found they required improvement.

Students, staff and parents have raised concerns about the route the school is taking with a number of staff at the school rumoured to be leaving in the summer.

During a public meeting at the school, Fern, who has two children at the school, said: "We are all here tonight because we are worried about the school, therefore we are worried about our children.

"This was a great school and a school we have all really invested in. All the staff I have ever met at parent’s evenings are very focused on what they are doing, so how have we got here? Where did things go so wrong?"

She added: "I can just sense alarm bells - why is there a high turnover of staff? What is happening? There is not any continuity for the kids.

"The situation just feels so dangerous and frightening when you have been at a school that is so lovely and we have supported and will always support."

A major concern raised in the meeting was about the new senior leadership restructuring. One parent claimed this left a massive strain on students, who say they have witnessed teachers crying in the classroom.

Headteacher Michael Jones concluded in the meeting that the leadership restructuring was "difficult for staff, students and parents" but is needed to for the school to rebuild.

In a letter home he said: "The Headteacher and Governing Body must seek to ensure that the Senior Leadership model is best suited to achieving the school’s mission of ‘Achievement and Opportunity for all’.

"This new proposal will enable the Headteacher to lead the whole school towards outstanding status through a clear and effective accountability structure."

Fern is right this is all very worrying and instead of forcing us to buy yet another new school uniform the head teacher should be focusing on the well being of the staff and children I hope this school isn't a sinking ship!

Fern is right to be so concerned, we all are! My child has witnessed several teachers visibly distraught at what is happening there - we are not being given the entire picture! Especially at this time of the year, with exams on a daily basis, our children should be able to focus on their education, with the amazing support and encouragement of their teachers and mentors, without being upset by losing those very people who have done so much for them, who have nurtured them, supported them....and occasionally ,metaphorically kicked the odd butt, but are now leaving - and they ARE leaving, make no mistake.

Before I start I would just like to say I'm not stopping anyone from having their opinions but I'm now going to give you mine - I am a Holmer Green Student. I'm not going to pretend issues are not happening because they are but I can assure you the school are doing everything. Yes, some teachers will be leaving in the reshuffle of senior leadership and some may be leaving because of other reasons. What I'm saying is that you cant stop staff leaving, whether they've been sacked or not. The reshuffle is essential for the school to move forward and hopefully they will strive to achieve. As for the school uniform, my self and many of my peers currently think our current school uniform makes us look like primary school children, polo shirts and jumpers. When you look at other schools in the area they all wear the much smarter shirt, tie and blazer alternative. It is known that the new uniform is optional for all students (apart from the new year 7 intake) until September 2015 meaning the school has been generous into giving parents enough time to gather finances to purchase it. I myself have never witnessed any members of staff crying however I have heard rumours. Us students have not been fully informed about the complete list of staff leaving. Any responsible student will be fully focused on exams and place any feelings about teachers to one side. My final point is the staff are still being incredibly kind, caring and supportive and encouraging students to do their best at all times regardless of any issues they are currently facing.

Fine, don't believe me. But I swear on my life I'm a current student and am doing this as I am proud of MY education. Some young people don't have a decent education so I'm fighting to protect mine.
It may also be of interest I'm in top set English which gives me the ability to change my writing style and tone to suit my audience!!

The behaviour of Mr Jones is totally inexcusable, hiding behind the Ofsted report is appalling, and dealing with the seniors staff situation has further added to his inadequacy - despite he students setting up a facebook group to voice their concerns along with parents voicing theirs, no one has yet bothered to explain really what is going on, apart from the fact that he has blamed the inefficiency and effectiveness on others i.e senior leadership team-seems like the wrong people are leaving, the fish stinks from the head down - fact

Well there we go then... The truth is out. Key teachers have been made redundant due to a "restructure" Mr Jones admitted at the parent meeting I attended this week that the restructure was in place BEFORE THE OFSTED VISIT... These senior teacher's were NOT made redundant because of an Ofsted report,My child has told me that on a near daily basis more and more teacher's are handing in their notice. As a parent of a year eleven student I have been very disturbed by all the stories coming out of HGSS. But I will say this and I mean it. I know who to blame for the stress that my child has had to deal with, on top of trying to study. MY child will not be attending sixth form, The kids have been messed about on a near daily basis because of the indecision of the headmaster as to the option blocks and A level's that he will be offering. How do you justify spending what I pressume is tax payer's money on a new building to incorporate a sixth form block, when all your loyal till now students are leaving to go elsewhere? Students and parent's are voting with their feet. i feel sorry for any parent that has a child in the lower year groups, Where was OFSTED when we needed them.. We trust Ofsted to monitor our schools. I know that I complained to Ofsted, as did many parents that I know. They have failed us as well. Mr Jones kept using the excuse that money was an issue. That funding has been cut, if his sixth form does not fill then his funds will go down again. Did Mr Jones, the governor's and his financial advisors, not for see this happening. If the senior management team are not considered good enough to continue in the school to take this school forward then should the Head, governor's and especially the financial manager be held accountable for the mess the school is in and be 'restructured" as well. If you run a business then you constantly for cast for the following year.common sense I believe. This school is heading for special measures. Mr Jones and his governor's need to stand down now and let the very people he is 'restructuring' take over. As for the comment at the meeting about having a line of communication to the governor's, NOT SO. When I rang I was told I could not have an email address to write to governor's and that everything had to go through Mr Jones. Not the case now I hear. i would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at HGSS for the education of my child, But the sooner the exam's are over the happier I will be.If I had my way I would not allow the results of my child's exams to be published in the press, because Mr Jones does not deserve the pat on the back for them. The students would have achieved them despite him not because of him.In conclusion, how insensitive to bring in a new school uniform and see it as a massive big deal when your school lays in ruins around you.

The school has been generous? so your parents are happy to buy a new uniform to wear for only a year? I doubt many parents are too happy about it but Mr Jones had already decided that's what he was going to do. As for rubymoon's comments - shocking and even more worrying, what happened to this wonderful school???

That means that you are currently year nine. What a wonderful English Department HGSS has that they have taught you to express yourself as above. English were getting an awful press at the meeting the other night. I am relieved and happy that obviously everyone was wrong. Begs the question as to why a restructure was needed in the first place. I wish you well for the future. Your English teacher has taught you well.

It would appear that the one thing that Holmer Green has in abundance, is a staff of caring, committed, empathic and professional individuals who deserve better, in order to continue to do the incredible job they do....for ALL of our children! Something, has to be sorted!!

To be honest, it is ridiculous. I myself am a student at Holmer Green Senior School stressing about exams. The whole situation is a joke. Why are we investing in a new school uniform (that myself nor my classmates are fond of), when we could be investing in new teachers.
Despite it being on the low, we all know about the extraordinary amount of teachers leaving because of how much they dislike the way the school is currently being run. What is Mr Jones' plan for when he no longer has teachers to teach? What will be his next 're structuring' plan? As a student, I am currently worried, not just about the teachers (who are very upset), but my GCSEs...I am scared there will be no teachers to teach me and I will end up with no GCSEs. It is scary and things need dealing with. Since the Ofsted report, I haven't liked any decisions made around the school and I'm sure many people agree with me.
I'm sick of worrying and not knowing which of my favourite teachers are leaving next. It's a fright and if nothing proceeds to happen, I am seriously contemplating moving schools and finishing my GCSEs there.

Weather the storm. HGSS is an excellent school. Unfortunatly, bullying of staff in schools is rife, manipulation of results is not uncommon (for instance, less able children take year 10 science over two years, instead of taking two modules, result "better" A*-C!). Take out pupils results from those who, for whatever reason, end up in PRU. I don't think, in the long term, there's anything to worry about.

Can I just add that this isn't the only school around bucks to be suffering, Ofsted have changed the way they mark a school & there are quite a lot that have gone into special measures because of the new marking scheme. Just because they are in special measures doesn't really mean they are a rubbish school. Be a parent, get involved and offer to help where possible & always think positive, at the end of the day if your child wants to learn, they will excel in any school. If you have a child with a bad attitude towards school & doesn't really want to learn then this child isn't going to go far in life, so its not just a schools fault.

HGSS was an excellent school - unfortunately it isn't now and that's not the fault of OFSTED - it is due to the leadership decisions made by the man in charge. Horatio - the long term is irrelevant to those parents like Fern who currently have children at the school. Brookie - children will only truly excel when they have excellent expert teachers - do you know how many teachers are leaving or looking to leave? We're not talking about inexperienced poor teachers leaving or looking to go we're talking about some brilliant teachers - who are they going to be replaced by? Unfortunately, teachers and students know the one person who needs to go and until that happens things won't improve - end of story.

I'd like to say I'm glad Fern Britton sends her kids to a public school!

On a separate note - this school has been going downhill for 5 years now - Mr Gilbert turned (the previous headteacher) was the best thing that happened to this school - he turned it into the best secondary school in bucks - I'm sorry, as much as Mr Jones is a lovely guy, presuming this is his first headteacher post, he needs to go and leave the school to a more experienced headteacher. 11 years ago when I started here - this was the place to go - 11 years on - this isn't the place to go - THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!!!!

Truth be told I do a lot of driving in this area. I was busy at Misbourne a few years ago until they got it correct and the right man finally left - but by then a massive amount of damage had been done. At Misbourne Governors were slow to react or find out what was happening; teachers didn't trust the leadership and started to leave; Governors left; parents took their children elsewhere - so students left or didn't go in the first place. The tragedy was how long it took for Governors to take the appropriate action. There are a lot of parallels here. A few simple questions for Governors to ask. How many Governors have resigned this year and why? How much do the teachers believe in the leadership of Mr Jones? Why are virtually no students staying on into the 6th form? Why is the Head Teacher employing so many advisors (costing the school a fortune)? Finally: how many teachers (and in what positions) have left or will be leaving by the end of the summer term (I've heard it's well into double figures already) Governors, parents, teachers, and students are voting with their feet - and the wrong feet are staying. Taxi's waiting.

First I would like to say that I was "grammar School educated" The Grammar school system is NOT just the only important education system in this country that is important. THIS IS NOT what the comments on this page are for. Neither am I interested in where a television personality sends her children, I would imagine she continued to send her children to a school she trusted in and fair play to her. She's a MOTHER. HER COMMENTS AT THE MEETING WERE AS A MOTHER,NOT A TELEVISION PRESENTER.
I also take offence to this forum being used to suggest that the students at HGSS are 'chav's" Really!!!!!
Fact. My daughter had her leavers assembly on Friday, Mr Jones did not attend.
Fact. Students are not returning to sixth form and have been told that No entry requirement is now in place for sixth form, if this is true and they do not do well in their exams then they can go to sixth form.
Fact All the teachers named in previous articles are leaving.
Fact. Many more are going.
Fact. Students have been distressed on an almost daily basis and treated with disrespect and insensitivity by Mr Jones and the governors, He said that a lesson learnt for future was that communication had been bad, What about now Mr Jones, The students do not matter now?
Fact. Science has been in crisis for a while, a member of staff is going on maternity leave, Mr Jones said at the meeting that he would probably not replace her. Does that mean that our students will have a constant influx of supply teachers then?
Fact. The governor's believe that Mr Jones is doing the right thing. The parents were not given access to them and the email contact was removed from the website, until a parent complained after being told by Ofsted that she had to ring back and say that this was an illegal practise.
Fact. There is a new Chair of Governors. He introduced himself to parents at the meeting. How many governor's have left in recent months, and why?
FACT; if you look on the website for the school there is a full governing body meeting at 7pm. I wonder if they would allow parents to attend that meeting, parents that were invited to become governor's at the meeting?
Fact. Mr Jones has help in from outside Holmer Green to help him sort his school out. Why can he not do that himself?
Fact.OFSTED HAVE FAILED THE PARENTS,KIDS AND THE WONDERFUL STAFF IN THIS SCHOOL,by not coming in and sorting this out.
Fact. These comments on here are by concerned parents, worried for the future education of their children,we are not "you people"I welcome comments from students, because they are the ones that matter, and I can assure you that my daughter and her peers are responsible and working hard, they do not have a bad attitude or not want to learn. But they are not being allowed to achieve their full potential because the adults right at the top are not giving them a safe, secure and harmonious place to do so. I wish HGSS luck I really do.

I suggest you look at the previous article that Mr Jones did in the Bucks Free Press a few weeks ago. His response to the website the kids had done on FB. He said that "No teaching staff were to be affected" If you scroll down to the Widmer Lady post you will see the teachers clearly named. This has now been verified. I do not write untruths. I write the facts that I learnt from a public meeting with your headmaster. I suggest you go and have a chat with him yourself on Monday morning and ask him yourself. The rest of the information I have is from MY year eleven daughter, speaking to Ofsted and reading your school website. I will not name the teachers in this post because I think they have probably been through enough. Thankyou

I’m sorry - it’s just an impression I got about secondary modern schools in this county - that’s why people from adjoining counties don’t have their children coached at private schools and other establishments to get their children into secondary modern schools in Bucks.
I thought I would post these comments in a helpful spirit to make the point I have made on previous occasions - that the failing secondary moderns are part of the ‘selective’ system - in fact secondary moderns are the major part of it.

I don’t want to make you more angry but which grammar school did you go to - some of the grammar in your post is a bit … well … oh it doesn’t matter.

I wish HGSS and all the students in Bucks Secondary Moderns the best of luck too.
