VINDALOO and World in Motion are undoubtedly two of the best England World Cup songs – but a former Royal Grammar School boy is staking his claim for the crown after a Twitter feud with pop superstar Shakira.

Harleen Bahra teamed up with composing pal Joe McGairl and animator Nick Murray Willis to create the character Muddy Boots and the catchy song England’s Year – which has more than 20,000 YouTube views.

Harleen, who raps on the cheeky track, said the trio were fed up of the lack of quality World Cup songs and hope their effort will reignite the spirit of the London 2012 and inspire England to glory in Brazil.

The 27-year-old said: “There has not been a good World Cup song since Vindaloo, even the official ones are bad. We were part of the same people moaning about those  songs so we wanted to do something about it.

“We wanted to come up with something that would captivate the nation, something that was funny and would recapture that London 2012 feeling, where everyone was united."

But it almost didn’t see the light of day after their Twitter account was temporarily suspended following a bizarre clash with Shakira, who’s track La La La – the official song for Brazil 2014 - was released just days before England’s Year.

Harleen said: “I wanted to tell Shakira about our song. Hers is called La La La and ours has lots of lalalalalalas in the chorus.

“We were only bantering, but maybe she didn’t see it that way.”

The track was written, recorded, mastered and put to the funny animated video, which features several celebrity cameo appearances, in just six weeks with no budget.

Rugby fan Harleen admits he asked his football fanatic friends for jokes and memorable moments from the beautiful game to pen the tune.

He said: “I am not really a football fan – I’m an England fan and love the spirit that supporting England in a big tournament brings with it.

“I’m a massive rugby fan so I had to ring about one hundred friends to get hold of ideas, jokes and puns to write the song. The reaction to it has been great.”
