THERE is something special about viewing artwork in the very studios where it was made. And from this Saturday artists across the county will be opening their doors for the following two weeks.

Bucks Open Studios takes place every June and sees more than 500 artists display their work in more than 200 different venues.

It's a great opportunity to see what great art there is on your doorstep.

Here we take a look at a few of the artists taking part:

Joanne Herbert, 51, Penn Road, Hazlemere.

Contemporary depictions of the Natural World. Open the next three weekends 10.30am to 4pm.

It is the first time for Joanne to take part in Bucks Open Studios. She started taking art more seriously, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2013. She said: "It was my kind of response, to use that as a form of therapy. I kind of realised that was what I wanted to do." Joanne, who has two children called Madeleine and Guy, was a GP at Hughenden Valley Surgery when she was diagnosed. A good friend suggested she took walks in the woods behind Hughenden Manor and she found the contact with nature calming and comforting. She took photos and soon started to make pencil drawings followed by compositions in charcoal, before progressing on to acrylic paintings on canvas. Joanne, 42, said: "I underwent a mastectomy but I considered myself fortunate as the cancer hadn’t spread and I did not require chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Through this time it was becoming increasingly obvious to me that I wouldn’t be able to return to medicine. My work as a GP was rewarding and enjoyable but I felt changed by the cancer and started to see myself more as an artist than a doctor."

Marlow Place Artists and Makers, Station Road, Marlow

A vibrant and diverse mix of work from nine artists. Open June 14 to 22, weekdays 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sundays 11am to 4.30pm.

Bucks Free Press: By Jeff Cummins

Jeff Cummins is just one of the nine artists exhibiting his work in this beautiful Georgian building. Jeff has designed record covers for Paul McCartney, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Nick Lowe and worked with Storm Thorgerson (Hipgnosis) on albums for Pink Floyd. He has designed covers for Radio Times and also illustrated children’s books for Harper Collins, Penguin and Walker Books. Among some of his work on display are several record cover designs created for Paul and Linda McCartney and a portrait of Margaret Thatcher for the cover of current affairs magazine, NOW!, back when she was Prime Minister. Jeff said: "One year when I went freelance I managed to get at least two McCartney albums. Being a Beatles fan at the time and before that when I was nine, it was very exciting." So what was Sir Paul like? Jeff said: "He always knew what he wanted and he wants to be in on everything. I was a bit cheeky a lot of the time. I grew up with The Beatles and you think you know them. You meet them and still think you know them. I used to say inappropriate stuff now and then." Jeff now works for Twogether in Marlow, which is a creative agency, and where the exhibition is being held.

Annie Sutherland, White House Cottage, Hawthorn Place, Church Road, Penn Pottery,

Stained glass, jewellery, painting. Open June 7 to 22, weekdays 10am to 2pm, Saturdays 10am to 5.30pm, Sundays 10am to 5.30pm. Not open on Thursdays.

Bucks Free Press: Annie Sutherland and her artwork

Annie, 75, was inspired to pursue her interest in art by her late uncle, actor Peter Cushing. She said: "He was terrific. He was such a lovely man. He was my favourite uncle by far, from quite an early age. He really set me on the road to art. My dad didn't want to let me go to art school and he said, 'If you don't let Annie go to art school then I will never speak to you again.' He was a brilliant artist. He was brilliant at watercolour painting and he wanted to encourage me." Annie is an art therapist, which helps her to employ a gardener and cleaner so she can work on her art in her shed in her garden.

George and Dragon Painters, The George and Dragon Hotel, High Street, West Wycombe.

Open June 12 to 19, 11am to 6pm.

Bucks Free Press: By Linda Travers Smith

The 18th century hotel will be host to five artists. Linda Travers Smith, one of the artists, said; "For many years we exhibited at Bucks Open Studios as The Parish Room Painters, we decided to move to the George and Dragon Hotel to extend out exhibition to eight days." Linda is a professional artist and member of the Society of Women Artists. She has exhibited at The Royal Institute of Watercolours, The Wildlife Art Society and regularly exhibits at the Mall Galleries in London.

There are plenty more artists to discover over the next two weeks, as this is just a taster. To find out more go to www.bucksopenstudios.org.uk or call 01296 614283.
